Hello,

I purchased a Ruger 10/22 for plinking and to introduce my daughters to guns. We took it to the range and had a great time. It did not have a scope so we used the sights that came with it. Brought back memories of my and my Crossman PowerMaster 760 bb gun. :)

I would like to get a scope exclusively for it. I know that the range of the rifle/22LR is limited so I don't want to get a scope that might be overkill for that rifle. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

MC

Nikon makes a nice rimfire scope. Prostaff model in a couple different power options.

Ditto for the Nikon, although I would probably look for a real lightweight fixed power scope in the $50 price range for a 10/22. I had bought a Savage 93 that came with pedestrian Simmons 3-9x40, moved it to my 10/22 and really like the result.

A basic 4X is all I've ever used till now on any .22lr. I did recently purchase a Nikon 2-7X Rimfire that I've yet to mount but my son's 10/22 wears a Nikon 4X and my mother is happy with her Nikon 2-7X atop a Browning SA 22.

Any good quality rimfire or adjustable objective scope will work, the lighter and compact the better.

Nikon and BSA both make moderately priced rimfire scopes. A Rimfire scope will be parallax free at 50 yards whereas a high power scope is normally set for 100 yards. An adjustable objective scope would be good too, at the expense of more $ and more bulk.
As far as magnification, the intended purpose will dictate what you need. A 4x would be adequate for hunting, more magnification could tempt you to take too long a shot. A 3-9x would be good for target work. The 10-22 is accurate enough to benefit from the increased magnification.

Depends what you want to do with it. A variable 2x7 or 3x9 would be a good all around scope. A fixed 10x for light range work. A 6x18 or 6x24 for long range work. My CZ452 and 10/22 Target both wear 6x24's with adjustable AO's for silohette league out to 100yds and steel plates to 250yds. Tasco makes a 6x24 AO Target for under $150 or pick up an older Weaver fixed 6 to 10 power off eBay for around $100 for a decent scope. For general plinking almost any scope in the $75+ range will do, I just wouldn't go ultra cheap.

I would definitely get an adjustable objective for better focusing at all ranges... I like to shoot from 25 out to 150 or so and a fixed objective lens just doesn't get it done IMO.. good luck and great gun...

Typically I promote using adjustable scopes for any type of long rifle...except .22LR rifles. Unless you plan on sniping squirrels from power lines at 200 meters a simple 4X fixed scope is plenty, and will agree with your wallet. But if you have a vendetta against squirrels go for it.

Weaver 4x - $125
Weaver 2-7x32 - $150
Weaver 3-9x32 AO - $237, this is the one I have on my 10/22 , with Talley low rings.

$60 BSA 4-16X AO works for me:

I think any of the decent 2-7x scopes are about perfect. Although a good argument can be made for a 1-4x. A 3-9 wouldn't be a bad choice, but I like something with less power, and wider field of view than 3X. That is the only reason I don't like a fixed 4X. They have too much magnification for most uses. I generally use a 2-7 and almost never take it off of 2x.

Lots of good choices, but I prefer this for a fairly inexpensive choice.

I've got a compact Bushnell fixed 4X and it and the scope do just fine. Don't remember what I paid for it about 10-15 years ago but it still maintains it's zero.;)

Hunting & Plinking, or Target shooting? For hunting and plinking 2-7x with large visible crosshairs for targets I like 10x power and up with a fine crosshair and target dot reticle...the more X the better! LOL

When looking for a scope, I like the used gun section at Cabela's You can often find at least one gun priced at $300-$400 with $$200-400 glass on it. Buy the gun, keep the glass and sell the gun. Even if you get less when you sell the gun, you get the scope for a great price.

Put a cheap BSA 2-7x 32mm scope on my 10/22 back in 1999 because I was low on $$ at the time and figured in a few years it would be time to upgrade to something better. Well; the BSA is still on it 'cause I found that it wasn't as bad as I thought they were. The gun's just for general plinking and squirrel hunting and rarely ever used past 50 yards. The BSA has worked out good enough for what I use it for and has been trouble free. I'm a big Leupold fan and realize that something like a Leupold or a Nikon would indeed be an upgrade but the little BSA works well enough that I figured; "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Something with an adjustable objective or AO is really nice. This lets the scope be used at close ranges like 25 yards without skewing the image due to parallax.

Another vote for the Simmons 4x "22 mag". Just make sure to throw away the rings that come with the scope.

Mine has worn a Bushnell 3x7 since about 1987 or so, and it has served me well. Pretty much as "dead-on" as the barrel (and me) need it to be. Back then, I think it went for around $15-20.

+1 for Simmons. I have a silver 22 Mag 3x9-40 to match the Butler Creek stock and silver barrel, and it shoots perfectly. I also got Redfield scope rings with a see-through sight so I can still use the irons if need be. I dialed the scope in for 75 yards, and the irons hold at ~40, so I can instantly switch between the two.
