Scope Mount Recommendations for Sportical

First post, so be nice! Seriously, I am a total beginner in the AR-15 world so I thought I’d get a rifle for beginners and maybe move up later. The DPMS Sportical flat top seemed like a fit. (Besides, it was one of the very few that I could find.) If toy money and availability were not issues I’d have bought one of the varmint type models. I won’t be going the tactical route, I’m sure. I’m always looking for value and want to save a buck without going cheap which just throws bucks away.

Finally my question - I’ll be putting a scope on this and I’ve got questions regarding the scope mount and especially the proper height. It seems like some rise would be good, but how much. I like the idea of one piece mounts like the one below from RRA, and the price isn’t too bad. I’d appreciate hearing what you guys have to say. I probably will not mount iron sights because they just cost too much for the use they'll see.

By the way, I’m thinking of a scope from the Bushnell 3200 series and would appreciate your thoughts on that, too.

You need approx 1.4 - 1.6" mount height (that's rail to ring center) for the AR-15. You'll also need to have the ocular lens of the scope (the rear lens) forward of the charging handle for proper eye relief. This means you want some type of one-piece cantilevered mount, such as the Armalite or the LaRue.

The LaRue SPR and EER mounts are the standard by which other AR-series mounts are judged, and rightly so: they are the best.

I agree with the Larue SPR mount. I'll be getting one for both my LR-308 and AR-15 soon.

They are the best, and they are a on the pricy side-- about $220.

I suspect that you are trying to be on the economical side on this rifle and I can relate. For that reason I want to toss out another mount that may be a fit to begin with.

I will not assert that it has the quality, durability, or the workmanship of the Larue, but I can say that the couple that I've owned have held zero through this past deer season.

I'm talking about the CAA 30mm one-piece mount that is sold by Aimsurplus for about $25.00.

Because all of my funds were into other projects, I found myself out-of-pocket needing mounts for my AR and LR-308. I had just dropped a ton of money on my Mark 4 optic and was a little light in the wallet. So, I figured "what the hell.... If they break, I'm out very little."

So far, I've beat the AR around on the back of a 4-wheeler, and dragged the LR-308 up deer stands for the last few months. Both have held zero and are solid.

But I have no idea what this mount is made of or how strong it is. It is not quick-detachable. It does, however have enough clearance underneath it to have flip-up iron sights.


I'm not advocating that these mounts are on par with Larue, or ADM, but they have been worth the money spent on them.

You guys have given me some great information. I really appreciate it. From here I can make an solid decision and (I think) avoid the pitfalls that come when rookies just guess what they ought to be buying.
