I know that Stith made a scope mount for the Savage 99, but I was wondering if there were any '99's that were tapped on the top of the receiver by the factory? There are a hell of a lot of them that had a scope mounted, and so have the two holes on the receiver... but I am under the assumption that this is done after they left the factory. Any thoughts?

Some 99's were D&T'd at the factory. Any of the ones I have seen that were done aftermarket for Weaver bases had the holes drilled through the Savage stamp.

Factory D&T'ed Savage 99's are very common, I currently own three. Not sure exactly when they started, but my 1956 .243 is factory. It actually has 6 holes, 4 in receiver for scope bases and 2 in tang for aperture sight. The proper Weaver bases are 14 rear and 19 front, and they are pretty easy to find also.
