Scope Mounting Problem

I am having a problem getting my scope aligned correctly. I have a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06, a Hawke Frontier scope and DNZ Game Reaper one piece mount. I mounted the scope and leveled it. The problem is that when I bore sight it with a laser, I have to use all of the windage adjustment to get the cross hairs lined up with the laser.

I had a Weatherby 7mm Rem Mag that the scope was mounted on. I did not have any problem with the scope alignment. I sold the 7mm and replaced it with the 30-06. The mount is new as is the rifle.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like the receiver has been drilled and tapped "off center".

You can double check this by simply sliding a straight, 1" x 36" dowel rod in your scope mount and the rod will give a mechanical / visual indication of just how far off-center the receiver drilling actually is.

In the absence of a good dowel, try a sawed off broom handle or a piece of "straight" copper pipe or similar item.

Are you bore sighting at 25 yards? Maybe the laser is off; try putting it on sandbags and bore sight by looking down the bore with the bolt removed.

I played around with it a bit. Bore sighting the old fashioned way looking down the barrel. It was still off.

I removed the scope and mount. I reinstalled the mount using two screws and pushing the front to the right and back to the left as I tightened the screws. Then I installed the other two mount screws and the scope. This seemed to resolve the problem. However, I would be concerned that the mount may move back due to recoil and lugging the rifle around.

If I bedded the mount, would it fix it in place?

You mean like with J-B Weld or stock bedding compound? If you did that, you could probably still get the mount off with a propane torch and a hammer. I would wax the receiver or use some other release agent to make it easier to remove. How about LOC-TITE instead?

I would worry about that as well. In this case you may wish to go with the old Redfield or
Leopold style mounts that have the windage adjustment on the rear base. Either one piece or two piece are fine. I use this style (with Leopold scopes) on rifles carried on
horseback (the worst vibration there is) . I've never had one shift. The mount screws should have loctite. Best

Weatherby Vanguard 30-06
I would call Weatherby and let them fix it under warrentee.

It should never have made it out of the factory with off-center scope mount holes.
