Hey guys, I just got a Rem700 and bought the Vortex Viper 6.5-20 44mm scope. Ring recommendation is get medium for anything up to 44mm and high for anything 45mm or larger.

I want to get scope caps and have a bit of clearance. Any recommendation if I should just get High scope rings instead of medium?

Thanks all

Seeing as how the 44mm is at the top of the 'medium' range..you might want to just get high rings since you would also like some clearance and will be adding caps. If you bought locally, you would probably have the option to take it back for an exchange if you weren't happy without paying any extra out of pocket

I'm definitely interested in a range report and I would also like to hear about your Vortex scope!...how far out do you plan on shooting? What is your 700 chambered in?

Hi Joe, thanks for the response. I'm thinking I'm going to go with High as well. I haven't bought the rings yet but will order them today.

My Rem 700 Tactical Varmint is chambered 308 and I'm planning on shooting mostly 100 yards because it's hard finding a range with longer than that in the Bay Area, but I am planning on going out to the desert and shoot long range there.

I was initially concerned about getting too much scope, but I've gotten so many strong recommendations for the Vortex that I couldn't pass it up.

I'll definitely give a range report as soon ass I have it all mounted and zeroed.

Which ring will depend on the base. Set your scope on the base and shim it up with coins, or whatever you can find, and measue it when you get the correct height. A 1 peice rail will usually require a low ring(.250") which sometimes is still a bit high. Midway USA list the ring height with most rings, and will at least get you a part number if the price is to high.

Every ring manufacturer has a different measurement for their rings, one mans low, is another mans medium.

I've never had a problem with any 40mm scope in low rings. I don't want anything bigger, but would not think you would have any problem with medium rings and a 44mm scope. A 44mm objective would only bring it 2mm closer to the barrel than a 40mm objective.

It is best to have the scope mounted as low as possible with most rifles.

Once you mock up the height you need, be sure to check the bolt clearance also if you put the scope caps on. There's nothing worse than getting the objective set nice and low but not having enough bolt clearance when the eyepiece has a scope cap.

Thanks all. I ended up getting the Warne Medium Scope Rings from Opticsplanet. Rings, mount and scope are in route as I type. Can't wait to get it all mounted.

I've read some people's opinions that you should get a nice scope installed by a gunsmith. I was planning on just getting some locktite and doing it myself.
