I am looking for a scope to put on either a savage 111 rifle or a remington 700 sps rifle. I know some people say to buy scopes that are at least half to the price of the rifle you bought, but im not going to because then, well, my set up would cost more than i can afford right now. Anyway im looking for scopes that cost around 100 bucks. I have seen NCstar scopes at gunshows for rather inexpensive prices but have heard little of them. Whats the consensus? Anyone else have any other scopes?

Sorry, i forgot to include it. It will most likely be in 30-06. And i'll be shooting it as mostly a target rifle with an occaisonal hunt.

Around $100 on a .30-06 for target work and occasional hunt ...

I'd say a barely used Burris Fullfield II 3-9x for $130 on Ebay or wherever. That's going to stand up to the recoil, offer the best glass for that money and have a warranty.

At that price point, you are much better served getting a higher quality scope that is used than buying a poor scope new.

NCstar is pure garbage. Stay away from them.

I don't want to be a nay-sayer,here, but the reality is, with scopes, more than alot of things, you want to do it right, or not do it at all. A max limit of a hundred bucks is tough, unless as stated above , you find a deal on a good used scope.
I've been back into the scope researching mode lately, and i'm wracking my brain for something that might suit you.
And i concur with Don'tTreadOnMe, NCstar is junk.
Take a look at SWFA, they have a used/refurbished section that has some pretty cool deals.
I'd suggest spending a little time Googling around and using the search function brfore dropping any $$ , lots of good info out there that will save you some money and grief.
I was just stumbling off to bed, i'll take a fresh look around tomorrow. Hopefully someone more qualified and less sleepy will have chimed in by then.

The ncstars and BSA's are pure garbage. A scope that while not the finest optically will give you years if good service is the Bushnell banner series. These are some seriously tough scopes I had had went through several hard hitting rifles 45-70's a 35 whelen and many others. It finally died when a scope ring sheared off after a box of 460magnum in a encore carbine. I feel confident that the scope would still be working today if the ring hadn't failed.

Myself I prefer Sightrons, Prostaff's and Leupold VXIII's but I have a use for a Bushnell banner at times and won't knock them. I just installed a 6" eye relief 3x9x40 banner on a 35Whelen that I chose over much more pricey optics cause you couldn't get that much eye relief in a rifle scope at any price.

If scopes were cars they would be as follows

BSA, NcSTAR==> 1988 YUGO with a engine knock & bald tires

Bushnell Banner==> 1991 Chevrolet Caprice, rugged and reliable just nothing fancy

Sightron SI and Nikon Prostaff, Leupold rifleman and VXI==> 2002 Honda Accord

Leupold VXIII, Burris FFII==> 1999 BMW 5 series "the ultimate drivers car"

Ziess, Leupold/s above a VXII and other european optics ==> a new Bentley Continental GT

All of the above models will get you to work reliably except one.

Walmart had some Nikkon Prostaffs and Bushnells Banners marked way down here. You might check there.

( quote) " A scope that while not the finest optically will give you years if good service is the Bushnell banner series."

Though it's probably an exception, the Banner that came on my Beeman R9 pellet rifle a couple months ago, is in the mail on its way back to Bushnell. The magnification ring has been frozen in place about since i got it (and they're specifically rated as OK for air-gun use). The Banner is near the low-end of Bushnells line.
But, I just found something that may work for you. There's a 3-9x40 Bushnell legend at Opticsplanet for $127 with free shipping. That's something like $100 below retail, and the Legend series is Bushnells best scope short of their Elite line.
And if you're wondering why i'm recommending Bushnell after having to return one that's only a couple months old, it's 'cause Bushnells upper end stuff is still pretty decent, and after talking with customer service at Bushnell, it looks like i can upgrade to a higher end scope rather than having my Banner repaired.
So, take a look at that legend at OpticsPlanet, they have lots of other nice choices, most with free shipping, too. Another good optics dealer is SWFA.No free shipping, but some of their stuff is even cheaper than OP.

while 6.5X is more than i would want for a hunting scope, you did say it would be mostly for target use. there, the top end 20X should be good.

be sure to read the reviews of previous buyers, they seem pretty happy with this model...

I often heard the advice that when confronted with the comoon problem of not enough budget left for good scope, the best thing to do is - spend some time getting to know the rifle with iron sights and save up some more budget. Of course if it doesn't have iron sights that is difficult. If you can't stand to wait buy a cheap used scope just to shoot and who knows, it may be better than you think. The age old question: less now or more later.

Would suggest you go with a 3x9x40 or perhaps a 4x12x40 scope instead of 3x9x50.

Any scope with a 50mm objective lens will require extra high mounts to clear the barrel and that will pull your cheek up from the stock - and that is BAD.

I am sure I will be pillioried by the scope snobs, but I honestly have had great luck with Tasco scopes. I felt the need to buy a more expensive scope a couple years ago when I bought my first AR. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about Leupold. So, I bought a VX2 3-9x40, one of their cheaper scopes, but at over $200, quite a jump from what I had ever paid for a scope. To say I was less than impressed is an understatment. If the clarity of this scope was one bit better than the half a dozen Tascos I own I sure could not tell it. The power settings turn the opposite way from any scope I ever had. And to top it all off, the clicks don't click on the adjustments! I gave it to my wife to put on her .308. And bought myself a Tasco, and have been completely happy with it. You can buy most Tascos at well under a hundred bucks. Now, I aint saying the $30 Tasco you can buy at Wal-Mart is the best thing going (although they are pretty dang good too for the money!), but the ones closer to the $100 mark are pretty dang good, or at least all the ones I have owned are.

The ncstars and BSA's are pure garbage.
You could easily spend more then the price of a good scope on ammo trying to sight one in.

I went through two BSA air-rifle scopes last year, and probably over 300 shots, trying to get either one of them zeroed.

One time, two clicks was 3", and the next time two clicks was 8".
Then four clicks back the other way was nowhere near where I started.

300 rounds of 30-06 ammo at todays prices would buy you a pretty good Leupold!

Shawnee is telling you straight. The scope i recommended above is the same as the one you're considering, but $10 cheaper and no big 50mm. bell .

I have the 10X super sniper on my AR, I'm happy with it, while the marking for the parralax adjustment ring doesn't match up to the actual ranging (its on 200 meter mark to get a nice clear sight picture at 100 meters) but for 300 bucks it hard to beat. is it as good of glass as my Leupold MK 4? no, I can tell the difference in clarity between the two but its good for its intended purpose.

I would pass on Simmons. When I bought a rifle the guy threw in one of their "higher end" models. Instead of the 1/4" adjusments, they were 3" at 100 yards. The crosshairs twisted too. I adjusted the magnification, and the instead of vertical and horizontal they were diagnal like an "X".

I have a Simmon's scope that is very good. I will be looking for another scope like the Super Sniper to get target external adjustment knobs. I also like the side focus knob on the SS>
