Came across a Colt Detective Special the other day for $400 and the price seemed too good to pass on. According to the serial number it was made in 1957.

Very nice revolver for reasonable price. Unlike Smith & Wesson revolvers the Colts had nicely shaped and checkered grips.

Yeah I would have to say that your Detective Special was a steal at that price! Congrats on one very sweet aquisition.

Found one myself a few months ago for $500, it's a newer model with the shrouded ejector rod. I found very rough models for under 400 and cherry ones for about 800, so I picked one in between. Neat little gun and fits my hand better than my Smith 442 (and one more round, too). I have found it a bit harder to find top-end defensive ammo that is not +P, though.

Like wgp, I recently found a shrouded ejector DS and paid the same price. I like the size and the extra round too.

They will shoot +p ammo, just don't give them a steady diet of it and it will be OK.

very nice, I am really into smith and wesson revolver but I would love to have an old Colt. Every time i see one though someone wants an astronomical price for it.

Nice! Very nice, mark the date you did this on a calendar because at today's classic Colt inflation rate, you will be celebrating each anniversary. Major score!

You could always load it with Buffalo Bore 158 LSWHP +P ammo for defense, and load the non +P version of it for practice. You can buy the same bullets they use from rimrockbullets dot net.
Nice D frames, both of you.
Every time I see one of these, I think of the Alice Cooper album "Lace and Whiskey".
One is pretty prominent in the cover art.

Just realized Seagram's VO is the whiskey in the pic. That's some nasty stuff. Never did like it.

Just remember, what's referred to as +P nowadays was considered standard pressure before 1972.
So, it's what your gun was built to shoot.
In fact, most modern +P ammo is pretty weak. It's a marketing ploy.
Buffalo Bore +P ammo is one of very few that is actually the same velocity as the original loadings.
The .38 Spl wasn't known as a widowmaker because it lacked in power, rather, the RNL bulllet design was sorely lacking in performance.

Several months ago I was able to purchase a DS II that was new in the box for a pretty stiff price, $800. I have been shooting it regularly and carry it often. I have no regrets for the price or the using of it. A great gun.
