Seattle Proposes New Tax On Guns & Ammo Sales

No, a Violence Tax is a great idea. The Violence itself should be taxed, not one particular instrument capable of inflicting it. Bring back weregild. ;)

I heard on the news that part of the tax money will be used to "promote more gun safety studies". I think that means funding more of those "research" studies that come up with "you're 43 more times likely to be killed in a house with a gun".

Dr Fred Rivara (does that name ring a bell???) who works at Seattle Childrens Hospital is probably clamoring for more research money since his federal source has been cut off for some time now.

I think a violence tax is a great thing. I think it should take the form of a surcharge on the fees of criminal defense lawyers.

It seems the East Coast and West Coast are part of another planet sometimes. Well at least the NE and NW.

The demonization of the firearm is in full gear.

Always take the time to bring a non-firearm owning friend to the range. They may not choose to own a gun or take up shooting, but they vote.

Heating up now that it passed committee.

I wonder if they're going to tax alcohol out of reach since there are clear links between violence and alcohol consumption?

Yes, "accidents" caused by drunk drivers take innocent lives yet there's no call to make alcohol taxes so high you can't afford to buy a beer unless you can afford champaign.

This crap has been tried before,

As early as 1934 -- the $200 "transfer tax" on machine guns, sawed-off rifles and shotguns, and silencers. The tax was designed to be "confiscatory" as it was several times the value of the taxed weapons.

WHEN the tax passes, if it isn't immediately shot down by the state preemption law, look for something similar in the future! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

This sets a very bad precedent for assault on the second amendment, especially if this tax goes state wide. I've predicted since I started posting on THR that the feds will try and discourage people from buying ammo by taxing it into oblivion, much like how cigarettes are taxed and justify this as a public safety issue.

It's coming folks.
The NRA will challenge this, it is like a poll tax restriction on voting civil rights.

Apparently metrosexuals don't care about guns.

Just another reason to stay out of Socialist controlled Seattle.

This is EXACTLY how I see things playing out in America today.
There is the Socialist "Solution" (Chicago has the same misguided tax it out of existence and peace will prevail.}
and there is the Realist approach,
Stop running, stand and deliver!

Passed today.. goes into effect Jan 1st 2016

I don't expect the NRA to even notice this but SAF will challenge it in court. They are based just across the lake in Bellevue. They've busted the city of Seattle in court once before using pre-exemption in our state constitution. Not that it really matters to me, they drove me out of King county 20 years ago with their property taxes. You have to make 150K a year to afford to live in that s*** h***.

Those of us who actually reside up here in the area care little about what the city of Seattle chooses to do. It's a lost cause and we consider the entire city "behind enemy lines." I know of only one store-front FFL in the city, and it looks as though he'll probably be moving (he fought the good fight and testified before the City Council).

I know I speak for most of us folk up here when I say that we typically only visit Seattle if we have family or friends visiting who want to go do a couple tourist things in the city. I've gone two years without stopping in that city ... There's plenty to do in Western Washington without going to Seattle, and frankly most of us on this side of the state (and pretty much everybody East of the Cascades) resents Seattle being held up as representative of the whole state of Washington.

WA state law

Here it is in black and white from the AG in 2008.

RCW 9.41 sets forth a comprehensive scheme of state firearms regulations. This statutory scheme includes preemption. RCW 9.41.290 provides: The state of Washington hereby fully occupies and preempts the entire field of firearms regulation within the boundaries of the state, including the registration, licensing, possession, purchase, sale, acquisition, transfer, discharge, and transportation of firearms, or any other element relating to firearms or parts thereof, including ammunition and reloader components. Cities, towns, and counties or other municipalities may enact only those laws and ordinances relating to firearms that are specifically authorized by state law, as in RCW 9.41.300, and are consistent with this chapter. Such local ordinances shall have the same penalty as provided for by state law. Local laws and ordinances that are inconsistent with, more restrictive than, or exceed the requirements of state law shall not be enacted and are preempted and repealed, regardless of the nature of the code, charter, or home rule status of such city, town, county, or municipality. -

I guess some of those folks on the Seattle city council can't read or maybe the attorneys working for the city just need something to do.

Cook County Illinois already has the $25.00 fee(per gun) but the nickle per round failed. Its just a slush fund fee for the connected.

The absolute hideous hive of filthy, criminal Socialists that comprises the Seattle city council should be expelled from the state for the PURPOSEFUL wasting of public tax dollars that passing this bill will cause. This WILL be fought in court, the state preemption law WILL win and the city council knew that when they passed this. Their incredible arrogance should be punished. I propose that we make the city council members pay for the defense of THEIR new law! Why should the tax payer foot the bill for their perverse actions?

Socialist agenda continues.....

Living in "The People's Republic of Maryland" I understand the thinking
of the west coast in general. Maryland would desperately love to actually
be a sub-component of California.
The "Socialist/Liberal ....yes- Democrat" idea is to slowly wear down all
opposition to gun control through continuously changing attack strategy's.
As we all know- an armed (and prepared) body of citizens is a direct and
fearful state for these "haters of true freedom and democracy."
I believe that until we restore America to her former Christian values and
national pride/respect; this cancer will continue to grow. When their "chair
woman" (Debbie Wasserman Shultz) can not explain the difference between
a Socialist and a Democrat....it's apparent what their true direction is.
Pray for America and be strong!!!
