Man Killed In Downtown Seattle Altercation

Seattle, WA -- A man is dead after gunfire at Westlake Center in Seattle sent shoppers scrambling for cover this morning.

The shooting happened outside the busy mall at 11:30 as hundreds of shoppers jammed the stores and sidewalks.

Witnesses say the two men in their mid 20s engaged in a loud argument.

They say one man chased the other man down, kicked him and began beating him. Then they heard a gunshot and the man who was doing the beating was on the ground.

Witnesses say the shooter then sat down after pulling the trigger.

The shooting shut down the city block in front of the Westlake Mall while Seattle police investigated and shoppers walked around the crime tape. Seattle police arrived at the scene within moments of the shooting.

Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel says the shooter did not attempt to run and told officers he was the one who did it, handing his gun over to police.

The victim was rushed to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, where he died.

Police say the shooter had a license to carry a concealed weapon and they have no plans to charge him. Police say they had received complaints that the shooting victim had been harassing other people at the center and the shooter and the victim did not know each other.

Assuming that's accurate it pretty much says it all. Running away chased down and kicked. Can't see how much more justified this could have gotten. If someone is putting the boots to you on the ground it don't take but one lucky shot to do serious bodily harm or kill you. It's about as vulnerable as you can get to that kind of attack. I have no doubt the shooter was in fear of his life, and it appears the police feel the same way.

Of course the paper has to label the guy who got shot as "the victim."

Yea when I started reading that sentence I thought they were refering to the guy that got chased down, the snot kicked outta him, and defended himself , you know the victim. Not the guy that chased another man down, knocked him to the ground and started to beat him to the point that he thought he was going to die. I should have known better.

Do any other news sources happen to mention what the gun was? Whenever someone successfully manages a one-shot stop of an attacker, I always like to hear just what it was they were carrying! (Yes, I know, it's placement and training, but still)

Note that the police didn't apparently DO anything about this until someone had to defend their lives from him with lethal force. And, of course, yes. The attacker becomes the victim.

Some of the later reports started making it clear who the real "victim" was. When you have an individual shot after a "loud argument" it's understandable that they would call him the "victim" before all the facts come out. Let's remember that the reporting started while the police were still interviewing the shooter.

One woman on TV told the reporter something like "I wasn't scared because it was obvious the guy wasn't going to start shooting people at random." Nice level headed statement for a Seattlite.

The obvious question is where the cops were when they were getting reports of a crazy guy attacking and harassing people at Westlake (downtown's fanciest shopping area) well before the shooting.

One report mentioned that the shooter is black. No race card to be played there.

They were on their way apparently.
