LAKEWAY, Texas, December 3, 2003--The Second Amendment Sisters (SAS) are proud to announce that they will be holding the SAFER, or Second Amendment Freedoms for Everyone Rally on Mother’s Day 2004.

The SAFER event will be held on Sunday May 9, 2004 in Washington, DC, currently scheduled for Freedom Plaza from 11am until 3pm.

The first SAS rally, which was named the “Armed Informed Mothers Rally & Marchâ€, was organized in direct response to the so-called “Million†Mom March (MMM). Both rallies were held on Mothers Day 2000.

“It is important that we continue to counter the anti-rights crowd head on. While we really would prefer not to have a rally on Mothers Day, we felt a great need to be there on this Mothers Day, yet again.†stated Dianne Sawyer, President of Second Amendment Sisters, “Mothers are the backbone of this nation. Increasingly, more women are arming themselves. Women are realizing that they personally have to take steps to assure their own safety, and often the safety of their children. By far, the safest means of self-defense is a firearm.â€

SAS, an all unpaid volunteer organization, has grown into a national organization with dues paying members throughout the United States, and Coordinators in nearly 30 states. “Self Defense is a Basic Human Rightâ€â„¢ is the SAS motto.

For further information and updates on the SAFER event, please check the special SAFER page on the SAS website at www.2asisters.org/SAFER or call 877-798-2828

FAST FACTS-
-According to the U.S. Supreme Court, criminals do not have to obtain licenses or register their weapons, as that would be an act of self-incrimination. (Haynes vs. U.S. 390 U.S. 85, 1968)
-In 1976, Washington, D.C. enacted on of the most restrictive gun control laws in the nation. Since then, the city’s murder rate has risen 134 percent while the national murder rate has dropped 2 percent. (Dr. Gary Kleck, University of Florida using FBI Uniform Crime Statistics, 1997)

The Brady org has applied for nearly every other rally sight on the Mall in DC that weekend

The application "permit" is free so Brady has removed the SAS from a line of sight protest at no cost.

I predict a rash of posts in May:
i wish i heard about the rally earlier

C-SPAN also gave some coverage (albeit a much smaller amount) to the Armed Informed Mothers March (AIMM)._ What a contrast!_ The crowd was upbeat, the speakers were rational and good-natured._ Everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves._ One of the speakers was a 22-year old woman who, at the age of 14, almost became a gang-rape victim._ Basically, a car containing four gang members approached her and stopped._ Two of the guys got out of the car and were in the process of abducting her when her father, about 100 feet away, brandished a holstered handgun._ The gang members saw the gun, jumped back into their car and drove off in quite a hurry._ Her dad didn't even have time to draw the pistol, they were gone that quickly._ Then it really hit me:_ Anybody who wants to deny us the right to defend our loved-ones is morally bankrupt._ Period._ That girl would definitely have been raped or killed if it weren't for her father carrying that gun._ I know it doesn't seem possible, but the gun control nuts would rather she had been raped or killed than saved by her father's gun._ They want us to become victims._ How could anybody with any amount of compassion insist on taking away our right to defend ourselves?_ How can anybody be so cold?

Now here's where the story gets interesting._ My roommate and his friends arrived at the AIMM (I even saw them on C-SPAN, if just for a split second.)_ At the end of the rally, they marched around the Washington Mall and at one point came within close proximity to the MMM attendees._ The AIMM marchers were threatened, yelled at, called "murders", and in my roommate's case, physically grabbed._ This from the people who say they want to stop violence!_ The girl who called my roommate a "murderer" quickly shut her trap when he informed her that Rosie O'Donnell is probably responsible for more murders then he, since she was the spokesperson for the country's largest firearms retail outlet (Kmart)._ He told me that he had never seen such hostility before, and that he felt, in his words, like a "minority"._ I find it ironic that the media portrays these people as the "good guys" and gun owners as "evil"._ He described the MMM followers as being somewhat mob-like in their actions and outbursts._ He had never seen anything like it before, an angry mob stirred into a frenzy by inflammatory rhetoric spewed forth by hostile speakers.

I most likely will not be able to attend, but I'll be glad to send some dollars their way to help fund the effort!
