I could swear I've had it off sometime since I bought it back in about 1980. I had the extractor out last night peering into the hole with a magnifier and a good LED light and couldn't see a thing but a spring and a star washer. On a Ruger specific forum someone made reference to a ball retainer. I'm familiar with such design but I didn't see any kind of sleeve in the hole by which to release the ball. I notice on the parts illustration that the crane seems to have a small hole at the front of the cylinder bearing, but no ball in the parts reference. Ruger experts I need your help.

Thanks,
Shimitup

Maybe there are changes in the design, but IIRC, the Security Six has a front end lock with a spring and pin just like an S&W. The end of the ejector rod has a hole in it since there is no center pin like an S&W has.

There is another hole as well; it's located opposed to the one in the diagram.
There is a ball bearing in each hole. When installed, the ejector rod makes the balls protrude from the crane/yoke tube to keep the the cylinder in place. I have no idea why they are not shown in the parts break down.

Appreciate it Greg,

As they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Despite having my ejector rod out the other night the cylinder wouldn't budge. My guess is after 30 years and many 1000's of rounds there's just some hard packed crud around the balls that won't let them back out. I'm tied up till next week when there's time I'll set the crane and cylinder in some solvent for a couple of days after which I'll see if loosens up.

Take care
