Hey guys,

I have a 4" Security Six police trade-in with some really small grips I don't care for. I am pretty Six-illerate, so what options are out there to replace them?

The serial number starts with 157. I prefer wood but don't mind rubber, the one dealbreaker is that I really hate finger grooves.

I have a set of rubber Pachmayer "Gripper" grips on my Security Six, but I like finger grooves. Nevertheless, I got my Pachmayer grips from Midway, and I see on their website (I didn't know how to link it) that they have some real nice looking Hogue wood grips (without finger grooves) for Security Sixes - about $70.

You might consider Hogue. They do offer the option of ordering WITHOUT finger grooves and in different wood species and one can even have them sized to fit his hand if ordered directly from Hogue. Here is a link to their site:

Unfortunately, they don't show the grips without grooves on a Six Series but you can get an idea about the shape.

These are the Pachmayr grips on my security six. I do like them but unfortunately I don't think Pachmayr doesn't list them for Security Six any more.
Pachmayr might not list them for the Security Six anymore, but as I said in my post (#2) Midway still lists them for sale on their website. Those are the same ones I have on my own Security Six.
However, the OP said he really hates finger grooves anyway. So, I guess it doesn't matter whether or not Pachmayr still builds "Gripper" grips for Security Sixes as far as the OP is concerned. ;)

Ruger makes (Or did make), larger grips as well as the smaller ones that fit the frame front and back.

Those are actually called "Big Grips" by the factory, lol.
I had them on my S6 and quite liked them.

The factory small grips are "Service Grips" and they are quite tiny, giving poor control, especially with Magnum loads, IMO.

Since the Ruger Security series hasn't been made for years - to my displeasure - I doubt if any manufacturing and stocking company still makes them. One might try Herrett in Idaho, they make grips to order but it will be spendy.
Probably the best bet is gun shows. Usually there are one or two people that have a cardboard box of 'old' grips (some still in box) or at least a lightly used pair.

As I recall, all the Ruger Security series used the same set (size, shape) for all of them EXCEPT for the round butt version, but all the round butts were the same. The one exception is the 150-XXXXX (first) series had an odd angle that Ruger altered for all the rest. I do not think any aftermarket grips at all will fit those. I think I have a pair somewhere in my gun show stuff, but I cannot remember the details. I'm getting ready so I'll look after breakfast.

Sure they do

Rule3, ah, you found a picture of a Six Series with the grooveless grips. I did find some but were shown on S&W's. I have had a number of Hogues without the grooves on my Rugers but not on a Six Series. When selecting certain woods and configurations if you have a Hogue made to fit your hand (at the time I think was $30 extra) the price was not much different than having a Herrett grip made to fit one's hand.

Ruger was selling the big grips on clearance a while back for like $10. I bought be set and didn't care for them so I sold the for what I had in them.
I wish I had them back.
Now they sell for 5-7 times that.
You might find a set of rubber Sile grips on EBay.
I believe Sile was the supplier of the "factory" big grips.

There are some grip companies on ebay from Thailand. That’s where I got my grips.

Confused? Does the OP not want no finger groove wood grips for a security six? Shown on a Ruger? Is what I linked not that??:uhoh:

The first link you posted of a Six Series with Pau Ferro is exactly what the OP probably wants as he says he hates finger grooves. The second shows Goncalo Alves on a S&W. I was just remarking when I did a search on Hogue rapidly most shown were on S&Ws. I was looking specifically for grooveless grips on a Ruger and did not find one but you did.

It took 8 months to get this tgrip for my 150 series revolver and I’m really happy with it

I purchased this Security Six in 1980 or so. Like the OP, the factory grips were way too small for my hand. So, at the same time that the Security Six was purchased, the shop owner had these substitute grips for sale. At that time, the cost was $19.00. They were made in the Philippines but the company that made them can no longer be located.

They do fit my grip nicely, however.

Did Ruger put 2 different grip frames on the Security Six? A friend has one that he ordered Hogue rubber grips for and by golly they don't fit properly at all.

Pachmayr made what they called Presentation grips for the Security Six that don't have finger grooves. I have two, a standard two-panel grip that covers the backstrap and extends below the bottom of the frame that I came with the first firearm I purchased in the 80s (161- prefix).

They also made a wraparound style I have on a somewhat earlier model (154- prefix) that is similar in profile but is a bit larger and also conceals the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame.

Both styles appear to be available on a popular online auction site at prices that wouldn't seem to break the bank.

The grips I have are larger than I'd prefer, although they're not bad for me in a cup-and-saucer grip. I'm thinking of getting a set of wood grips to replace one of them, but have never tried the wood grips.

Yes. There’s a high back and low back grip frame. Changed somewhere in the late 150- to early 151- serial number prefix.
