Ladies (and Gents, but this particular request is directed to the ladies),

SAS has received a request from a television producer and former law-enforcement officer in California. He is involved with a proposed tv series called 'Self Defense Heroes' (SDH). This is the description that he sent:

***************

What are Self Defense Heroes?

Here’s a different response to crime in America.

Several popular fictional and reality TV shows today carefully analyze what happened to a now-dead victim. The half hour TV series Self Defense Heroes tells the stories of ordinary folks who use common sense to avoid trouble, good strategies to protect their homes and neighborhoods, and who react swiftly to resist threats to one’s own safety, loved ones and property from human and natural catastrophe. It celebrates citizen triumph through planning and perseverance, not clinical deconstruction of what got you killed.

Self Defense Heroes choose to live.

Taken from personal stories and the files of local and national law enforcement agencies, these true stories reveal acts of courage from Americans of every race, creed and faith, from every age and economic level.

Self Defense Heroes will be hosted by a man and woman team (TBA).

Content includes dramatic reenactments of natural disasters and stories of how citizens fought back against violence like robbery, abduction, rape, assault, home invasion, carjacking, violent road rage and attempted murder. Crime stories will deconstruct the strategy of the criminal and what tactics and tools the survivors used to stay alive. Self Defense Heroes will offer personal safety tips and strategies drawn from each incident. Legal experts will explore what citizens can do to protect them and what are the limits of using force against criminals.

Now for the request - for SDH's pilot program the producer would like to profile women who actually had to discharge their firearm in a self-defense situation. Ideally the woman would be alone or protecting children, but otherwise the scenario and type of firearm used are not important. Later programs will profile men and will depict situations where the criminal ran away and no shots were fired, but for the pilot program they wanted scenarios that were a bit more hard-hitting, if you'll excuse the pun.

The program will air on a CATV station as it to be too controversial for network.

Please send this out to any email lists you have.

Women who are interested can email me their contact info at [email protected], or they can call the SAS Press line at 877-797-4857, and I will put get them in touch with the producer.

Thank you,

Melinda,

How well has the producer been vetted? This board has been burned recently (ask Jim March) and the first thing people are going to want to know is that this is on the up and up.

Rob,

Yes, I'm well aware of Jim's experience. I sent them the link on this site to Jim's experience w/ MTV and Comedy Central to let them know why people might be a bit "gun shy" about speaking of their experiences on camera. They were just as upset at what happened to Jim as we were.

The show itself will not be marketed to a channel like MTV. OLN, which carries American Shooter and other hunting/shooting shows, is a more likely candidate.

Personally, I wouldn't have posted the request if I had any reservations about how gun owners would be portrayed. We are already fighting an uphill battle with the media on that score, and I wouldn't want to give them any more ammunition.
