As others have said, it really does depend on the shooter.

My advice to new shooters consists of pro's and cons of any particular firearm as it pertains to me, however, I always emphasize the "me" aspect and that they may be comfortable with features I am not.

Some new shooters want maximum simplicity, others are willing to train for proficiency with firearms that have more complex features. Be it revolver or semi, let the shooter decide.

If you go with the .38 the lead full wadcutter rounds make a great self defense load and are much more mild recoiling than a +P .38 special. Also +1 on the cornered cat.

Any 1911 set up for her with slim grips, flat mainspring grip, short trigger, and lowered thumb safety. Or some combination of any of that. Many women do like the 1911.

My youngest daughter 22 years old 4'11" 100& nothing pounds. Her handgun of choice is the full size or government sized Colt Combat Elite, in 45acp of course, with very slim Navridex grip panels and a short trigger out of one of my ColtGunsite pistols, I had laying around. For CCW she uses a stock Springfield EMP 9mm.

Today there are a bunch of fine guns that either fit or can be made to fit a small hand simply. After the 1911, the HK P30 is arguably the most adaptable grip in the business. Hipowers usually fit too. A lot of women like the CZ grips too.

Hk p2000 sk optional s/m/L grips, S&W M&P Compact with S/M/L grips, Ruger etc.. , Glock 26/27 particularly when they release the 4th generation. Springfield XDm.

My point is there is now a lot of guns that have finally caught up to the 1911 in it's ability to fit different sized hands and fingers, let HER try them and decide.

If at all practical, take your lady to a range that rents many different handguns. Let her find what she likes the best. I know I was surprised when my daughter settled on the Government sized 1911 as her preferred handgun.

Remember, if Momma ain't happy, no body is happy.

Good luck.

Fred
