A relative of the Akron man charged in a Friday night shooting said his brother fired in self-defense.
Jed H. McGlaughlin, 24, was arrested Saturday by Akron police on a murder charge for the slaying of William Hale.
Hale, 34, of Marcy Street, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the torso. The 34-year-old Akron man was discovered by police slumped over the porch of a house at 809 Kling St., a duplex McGlaughlin shares with his parents.
Police detectives on Saturday gave no details for the motive of the shooting, but Mark McGlaughlin said Hale was armed, kicked down the front door and was inside the house when Jed McGlaughlin shot at him.
``People there heard him yell that he was going to kill my brother,'' said Mark McGlaughlin, who was not there at the time of the shooting.
``It was within his legal rights to do what he did, and soon he will be out,'' McGlaughlin said of his brother. ``He had had a legally registered firearm. In his position, I would have done the same thing.''
The McGlaughlin brothers are lifelong Akron residents, both graduates of Central-Hower High School.
Jed McGlaughlin is ``pretty passive,'' his brother said. ``I mean, he still lives at home.
``My parents were right downstairs. Everybody is pretty shook up,'' he said.
Mark McGlaughlin said Hale banged on the door to his parents' apartment first, then kicked through the door to his brother's upstairs quarters.
McGlaughlin said Hale wanted inside his brother's house to talk to a teenage girl who was hiding in Jed McGlaughlin's bathroom.
``My brother shot once,'' Mark McGlaughlin said. ``The guy was inside, but I don't know where.''
Summit County court records show Hale was scheduled for a Wednesday pretrial for two counts of felony cocaine possession and cocaine trafficking.
A woman who answered a telephone listed to Hale on Saturday told the Beacon Journal it was the wrong number.
McGlaughlin remains in the Summit County Jail in lieu of bond on the murder charge. He is scheduled for a court appearance at 9 a.m. Monday in Akron Municipal Court.
