Shooting called self-defense

Brother of arrested Akron man says victim was armed and kicked down door
By Kymberli Hagelberg
Beacon Journal staff writer

A relative of the Akron man charged in a Friday night shooting said his brother fired in self-defense.
Jed H. McGlaughlin, 24, was arrested Saturday by Akron police on a murder charge for the slaying of William Hale.
Hale, 34, of Marcy Street, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the torso. The 34-year-old Akron man was discovered by police slumped over the porch of a house at 809 Kling St., a duplex McGlaughlin shares with his parents.
Police detectives on Saturday gave no details for the motive of the shooting, but Mark McGlaughlin said Hale was armed, kicked down the front door and was inside the house when Jed McGlaughlin shot at him.
``People there heard him yell that he was going to kill my brother,'' said Mark McGlaughlin, who was not there at the time of the shooting.
``It was within his legal rights to do what he did, and soon he will be out,'' McGlaughlin said of his brother. ``He had had a legally registered firearm. In his position, I would have done the same thing.''
The McGlaughlin brothers are lifelong Akron residents, both graduates of Central-Hower High School.
Jed McGlaughlin is ``pretty passive,'' his brother said. ``I mean, he still lives at home.
``My parents were right downstairs. Everybody is pretty shook up,'' he said.
Mark McGlaughlin said Hale banged on the door to his parents' apartment first, then kicked through the door to his brother's upstairs quarters.
McGlaughlin said Hale wanted inside his brother's house to talk to a teenage girl who was hiding in Jed McGlaughlin's bathroom.
``My brother shot once,'' Mark McGlaughlin said. ``The guy was inside, but I don't know where.''
Summit County court records show Hale was scheduled for a Wednesday pretrial for two counts of felony cocaine possession and cocaine trafficking.
A woman who answered a telephone listed to Hale on Saturday told the Beacon Journal it was the wrong number.
McGlaughlin remains in the Summit County Jail in lieu of bond on the murder charge. He is scheduled for a court appearance at 9 a.m. Monday in Akron Municipal Court.

A very confusing article, I think they have their verbs mixed up. The "victim" was armed all right, the "perpetrator" or "invader" or "intruder" is dead. After untangling the details it looks like a good shooting to me. IF, of course, we are getting all the facts here.

My rewrite of this article goes like this. "Armed man facing charges of using and dealing cocaine breaks down door of apartment, chasing his girlfriend that is hiding in the bathroom. He is stopped by the armed homeowner who refused him entry to the apartment. The armed homeowner is suffering mental trauma from the death he had to cause."

Was the reporter talking to multiple cops at the same time?

I had to get out the dry erase board in the conference room for this one and make a flow chart. I've had to do that with police reports before, cops and pronouns. :D

El Tejon, pondering po-po report at dry erase board: O.K., so Cledus hit Bobby Lee with big, ol' stick. Bobbi Sue Lee cried out and hit Cledus with extraneous hubcap used as ashtray on coffee table. Po-po arrived, arrest everyone, hilarity ensues. :D

I know if I'd still been living at home when I was 24 and had a teenaged girl hiding in the bathroom I would have had more to worry about than being in jail. ;)

"Hale wanted inside his brother's house to talk to a teenage girl who was hiding in Jed McGlaughlin's bathroom."

Can't speak for Akron, but OH doesn't have any sort of "Registration"....

:fire:

Wonder if this guy's got a CHL too....

The article apparently was written by the janitor. Not that I could do better, but they're not paying me.

That''s why you get the big bucks, to sort that stuff out. Maybe next time you'd like to come out to the scene whlile all involved are high on adrenaline, alcohol and various other mind altering substances... Bring your dry erase board :neener: .

In a situation like that they all think we're the selection committeee for the Jerry Springer Show and they all feel the need to audition ;)

Ok, I'm done teasing my friend El T, back to the serious part of the thread....Jeff

While I think this was a good shoot (but the article is confusing), the hero of the story gets to experience due process. While it may be a shame that he must endure such a process, it is how our legal system is set up. Due process is not just for putting away bad guys, but also to clear good guys when circumstances are unclear.

While I repect Jeff and El Tejon's professions and efforts...you should try being the Foreman on the Jury trying this thing. You forgot the 8X10 glossy's, the LEO's spiral notebook...and the eraser board that keeps falling off the easel. :D "Recess" :p

Not all the data is clear. From untangling the original post sounds like a good shoot. We'll see once "unraveled".

Self defense = charges will be dropped.
Bullsh%$# story from newspaper reporter who never bothered to get the police's side of the story based on their investigation= shooter will be indicted for murder.
We'll know which one pretty soon.
BTW, cops generally like it when the bad guy gets shot, and aren't quick to arrest in a real self defense case. Let's wait and see what the cops' side of the story is.
