Sell, Stash or Reblue?

Digging around today found a S&W Model 28-2 that I put away a while ago. It has the blue box, papers and is about 90% with some blue wear. The previous owner had scratched some numbers on the bottom of the butt, not deep but no somehting that would wipe off. Now I wonder what to do with it...

Should I make it a safe queen like it has been for the past 15 years?

Should I just get rid of it (it doesnt do me any good)...

Should I shoot it (like I shoot half the other stuff I got, not)

Or should I get it reblued to factory specs then put it away for my estate?

If i was you i would Sell it if you dont have use for it .Im sure you could make somebody happy buying it..If ya lived in Oregon i would buy it from you..if the price was right :)
 
Sell it! Let a S&W nut have it. They are going for good prices now so you should make out fine. I know a guy that would love to have another one.:D
 
DON'T reblue it if you are expecting to get any collector interest. If you need the money or safe space now, sell it. If you have the space, keep it another 15 years and keep an eye on the collector market.

Just my opinion, worth every penny you paid for it.
 
I think Monte nailed it. IIRC, guns sent back to S&W for refinish get stamped with a letter prefix/suffix which a knowledgable collector will recognize.

This would lead a prudent person to surmise that the piece had quite probably seen extensive use, and perhaps had needed other repair/refurbishing as well. While that'd be a "plus" to a shooter, it's a big "minus" to a dyed-in-the-wool collector: it's no longer "original".

My guess is that you'd get more for it as-is from a collector now or in the foreseeable future than you would with refinishing. Most of the hard-core collectors that I know would rather have an "original" 90% than a pristine refinish, unless it's something truly rare.

Also my 1/50th of a dollar, and perhaps worth what you paid for it.
 
A set of target grips would cover the butt-scratching :D . I try not to get rid of anything. My heirs will pick over the lot.

I wish I could "find" a gun that I owned and forgot about. Oh, wait. In the back of my closet I just found a S&W K-38!

S&W doesn't stamp re-works anymore.
 
You could send it to me in Florida, maybe the change of climate would melt the numbers off?

Seriously, my vote is...keep it, shoot it and enjoy it. The numbers won't make it any less of a sweet gun to shoot.

I completely agree. I've owned 2 model 28's, and both were a joy to shoot.
 
Wanna get really loopy, watch me dig up ANOTHER S&W Model 18 (I buy one every year for caribou hunting then sell it, then get po'ed that I sold it, etc)

More loopy...Ive got a 29 -2 and a 6 inch 19 in the shop that just stare at me every day.....
