I have to laugh

When I see some many folks using the flag of the United States as the background to foreign designed and manufactured handguns. Mind you- I own a ton of foreign handguns also, so I am not one to talk about that. I guess I was raised to not cheapen the flag with too casual a display of it, that is why I don't have it on the car or wear it on shirts. After 14 years in the Army, I feel even more opinionated about it!

The only time the U.S. flag is to be displayed lying on something is on the casket of a veteran or other person authorized such a display. NOTHING should EVER be displayed on a flag. And flags should not be used for advertisements.

You can find the complete Flag Code, which is law, FAQs etc, at http://www.legion.org/?section=our_flag&subsection=flag_faq&content=flag_faq
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free.

Bunting of blue, white, and red always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkin or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. (Disposal of Unserviceable Flags Ceremony)
IMHO those of you not aware of this should remove your pictures from display. Use bunting instead. Or put your knees in the breeze if you're that patriotic.

Considering that the Supreme Court has validated the burning and vulgar defication of the United States Flag as "protected 1st Amendment speech" I would ask for a waiver from Flag protocol advocates when using the flag as a symbol to emphasize my 2nd Amendment Rights, and those of others, to freely procure implements of self-defense.

As to the foreign manufacturers included...the country of manufacture is less important to me than the US retailer I supported (in the face of an industry under assault by anti-gun forces seeking to litigate them out of existence). Considering that some US manufacturers (think Ruger, S&W, some others have been walking up to the line...e.g. Colt's "smart gun") have climbed in bed with the anti's thinking that lucrative government contracts (especially among urban LE controlled by anti-gun pol's) are more important than the right of individual citizens to keep and bear arms.

I respect your reverence for our flag and all it stands for and especially your service within our armed forces...I mean no disrespect to it when I use it as a backdrop to emphasize my right to keep and bear arms with implements of my choosing.

I do not ask your permission, but do ask your understanding. I will excercise my 1st Amendment right to be proud of my collection...proud of my country where the efforts of anti's not withstanding, it is still possible to do so.

Best wishes,

Go visit a veterans hospital. If after seeing the price those men paid for our freedoms, if you think you've earned any right to ignore the Flag Code, I salute you. But it is still wrong. People who do this are ignorant or lazy. YOU CAN USE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE BUNTING ALL DAY LONG.

Sir,

I know more than you may think I know about veterans.

I went shooting today. I wore a hat adorned with the United States flag given to me by a veteran of Viet Nam, and 25+ years total service in the United States Military.

Several of the photos you find so objectionable were taken by my bride of 17 years...the sister of that veteran.

Her/their father, a veteran of the United States Navy, Coast Guard and civil servant who spent nearly 30 years during the Cold War participating in activities that could not be discussed with either of them...leaving for assignment...not knowing when or if they would see him come home.

Me, I'm just a slug that has spent my entire career working for a defense contractor that provided implements that both gentleman benefitted from during their careers of service to our country.

We will need to respectfully agree to disagree about the relative merits of the flag as a viable artifact for use to make a political statement. Your code is based on etiquette. My code is based on a different perspective captured by the statement Molon Labe! Those colors don't run, they don't hide, they don't give up liberty easily or willingly or with respect...for the sake of etiquette.

Best wishes,

This was a cool photo thread. Why not take the politics to the correct forums?

Lets get back to happy gun photos please.

BTW, nice Ruger 22, t-driver.

Can't wait to try this out with the tripod and some good lighting. :D

Come on Sean!!! We been waiting for some high res pic's of that Delta for a long time now!!!!! So what kinda camera did you get?? I recall a Canon 3.2 mp but what model? Looks good so far!

Trigger (aka Mustang)

It's a Cannon S230. I wanted a good-quality camera that is very small, and this thing is TINY. I'm picking up the tripod today & will probalby take some pictures in good natural light tomorrow afternoon. Tonight I'm going to actually read the manual and fool around some, but I don't expect to get any super-duper photos with the lighting I've got at home.

Sean,

Your gonna love that camera. I have the older S200 (2MP) and it takes great pictures. It's a blast to play with and small enough that you could take anywhere. The metal body is definately durable. If your a watch effectionado or just interested in taking some great macro photos check out www.timezone.com . They have a section under time zone exposure and classic posts that can help you out wring out your camera performance.
