Semi Auto Rifle with Cheap Ammo

It's legal to use hi-caps in an SKS as long as you have enough compliance parts, but the vast majority of aftermarket SKS magazines are total crap.

Some surplus Russian/East European 7.62 x 54R ammo can average as low as $.17 per round, from what I read (the box I ordered somewhere on the phone is about $.20 per round). The ammo is corrosive, but many people say there is no problem, as long as you to squirt Windex cleaner down the barrel after you are finished shooting, then later use normal Nitro solvent etc.

Just ordered two mail-order Mosin Nagants (bolt-action) on Monday, and both cost less than $100. You might go to "7.62x54R.com", etc.

Some pawn shop people (even former soldiers) mistakenly call them SKS. The shop asked $130/each for the 44 carbine etc, but the guy did not know what they were, or possibly had the names mixed-up.
Even some younger people in very good gun stores do not recognize the spoken Mosin Nagant name, although the store might have two of the curved-bolt sniper version, among numerous other old used rifles.

I was in your shoes not too long ago. got a yugo sks and was never soo happy. you'll prolly have to clean the cosomoline out of it which is a great practice breaking down your rifle. easy to care for, simple shotting mechanics, and besides .22lr prolly the cheapest ammo=more range time. check if you can have a ak in 7.62 i just was gonna add one o the collection when i found out in CT you can oly own a variant not in 7.62. which made me very upset so im gonna build an ar. and despite the critism towards wolf in ars you can pick up ammo about as cheap as 7.62 soo. thats your other option. DEL-TON has ar receiver-less kits for 465. a cheap receiver is 100 and you got a lower entry level ar. fully customizeable later. i would say either ar or sks. if your looking semi. theres alot of breat bolt actions that you could easily start a collection of for 400! good luck. BTW i will shortly be posting pics of my AR build. right after uncle sam gives me back my damn money. lol also a BTW a rifle is not a good home defense gun unless you live where theres about 2(?) miles around since this is about how far out a bullet would be capible of reaching. get a brand new mossberg pump. but slugs to go to the range with are around >75-1.00 a piece. ssoooo. let us know what you end up doing huh?

The SKS/AK's might be hard to support down the road IMHO.

Doubt that. The guns and ammo are pretty much mainstream as anything else.

If you are broke broke broke find an SKS. It was my first rifle too. If you got just a little more moola get a saiga. When you get a couple hundred more you could convert it to pistol and hi cap magazines and have a AK variant which is arguably as high quality as you are going to get for the money. 450 for a compliant Russian AK. If you decide to go AK out the box look for something built on a Romy G kit versus the WASR. I am eyeballing a good build for 350 just to have a companion that uses the same magazines as my saiga. Don't need two but if any emergency arised two rifles with same magazines would be nice. The ammo is more affordable than any other caliber near its class.

I too keep eyeballing the MN because of cheap price and cheap ammo but so far I have resisted. If SHTF or self defense is the goal an SKS or AK will fit just about any scenario better than a trench warfare era bolt action.
