Legislation has been proposed in Illinois that may ban any semi automatic handgun that has the capacity to accept a magazine greater than 10 rounds unless we register the gun. The way the language is written is unclear, but for purposes of this thread let's assume it's true. It doesn't state that we're limited to 10 round magazines. We wouldn't be able to own a gun that's capable of using a magazine in excess of 10 rounds. The semi automatics which we'd be limited to which I can think of are 9mm 1911's, Shields and possibly LC9S'. The Glock 48 would be disqualified as soon as someone released a +1 or +2 adaptor for it's magazine. Are there any other semi automatics which would still be legal under this legislation without having to register it?

That is not what the proposed law states, Illinois Senate Bill 107, as banned firearms. This is what is states which is bad enough. Note the wording "and has one or more of the following".

Illinois residents can use the link below to contact their state senator and urge them to oppose this egregious infringment on our Second Amendment Rights, and mention you are really upset about these civil rights infringements on law abiding citizens while many Illinois politicians support sanctuary cities like Chicago and why are they more special than us making us instant felons for owning previously legal weapons we have owned for several years.

Thanks for the information. Yes, we're being attacked from more sides by more people very day. I quit attending the Grand American Trap Shoot when it moved to Illinois several years ago. I also quit doing business with anyone in the state of Illinois, including Rock Island Auctions, and explained to them why. During my lifetime, I have suffered through watching the state of Illinois, and several other states, transform itself from a state of free people, to a state of slaves, bound to the whims of the Democrat Party. Lincoln would be rolling over in his grave! The Democrats now control more states than they did during the height of the Confederacy. In reality, it doesn't matter what anyone thinks this new law applies to, it applies to whatever the Democrats in Illinois say that it applies to.

It's California's AR-AK ban almost word for word.

Good luck keeping what little of the 2nd you still have!

This might not be in the context which the OP meant. But you didn't exclude any .380 or 9x18 chamberings.
If you excluded foreign surplus guns, I don't see any mention of this..

You might realize that the actual Makarov handguns qualify, manufactured only in "East" Germany, Bulgaria, Russia and the PRC. Along with these, numerous others in 9x18, along with the .380 Sig 230/232 and many Walther PPK/S.
I've never noticed any options for magazines over eight rounds capacity for these guns, nor others in the same general grouping.

Reports are that there have been massive non compliance with laws like this proposed in Illinois as far as turning in banned weapons or registering them in other states. I would expect the same here if this becomes law but IMO it is not a done deal with all the gun loving down state Democrat voters.

A similar bill was introduced this year here in Virginia, but it was defeated -- for now. We're going to see these things springing up all over the country, even federally, in the next few years. And many of them will pass.

We can hope that they will be voided by the Supreme Court. But that may be a forlorn hope.

The gun community has a dilemma. Do we stonewall, or do we engage the proponents of these AWB's in a dialog to mitigate the damage? Obviously stonewalling is the best strategy in the early stages, but if and when passage becomes inevitable, then we need to become involved in the process. It will take a lot of savvy to identify the tipping point. I doubt that the gun-rights advocates have that kind of flexibility, and so we are going to get the worst possible outcome.

That’s the way I interpreted the language and hope you’re correct, but have received e-mails from groups such as the NRA-ILA interpreting it as I described. I think the way sentences 6B through 8 and where they placed the comma is causing confusion.

Illinois can pass all the stupid laws it wants....that everybody will ignore and the authorities will make no attempt to enforce. I just wish Illinois would STOP calling itself "the land of Lincoln."

Lincoln never set foot in this state until he was a grown man, having been born in Kentucky and grew up in Indiana.

. . . any semi automatic handgun that has the capacity to accept a magazine greater than 10 rounds. . .
The devil's always in the details, but as you've stated it here, I don't think there's any semiauto design that doesn't meet that criteria.

I live in Connecticut. This state went so far left in the past 30yrs. Take a look at are laws. I carry a glock 33 357sig , Its so bad here, Now the new governor wants to tax groceries and prescriptions. I'm only here for my daughter who goes to school. I cant even own a ar15. I carry a glock 36 or 33 when I go out, These leftist are trying to take over the whole country. When Connecticut passed the ban. Millions didn't comply. Theres shootings everyday. Didn't stop anything.

Some of the most conservative states in the country tax groceries.

All of my autoloading pistols only take one round at a time...

I don't know why this is surprising... 'common sense gun legislation' is never really the goal.

The Steyr-Hahn M1912, the Mauser C96 are two that come to mind. There are other top loading pistols. Time to bring 'em back.......
Any semi automatic pistol that uses detachable magazines is capable of holding more than ten rounds, and they know this. (Those who are advising those who draft the laws, not the legislators themselves....) So even Jar's SIG 230 and Mak above are on the hit list. At the "right" time, (after a future shooting incident with such a pistol) a word will be whispered in the ear of the "right' person, and voila, the full intent of the law will become known.

In both those cases, I would say the pistol accepts clips to load internal magazines. Devils, and details. . .

Which cannot hold more than ten rounds (M1912, 8) (Mauser C96, excluding M1932 Schnellfeuer variants with detachable magazines, 10) without major modifications. The clips are discarded, not introduced into the mechanism, as in the Mannlicher-type rifles. Such pistols would be exempt from said legislation, or at least defendable in court.

Anything with a detachable magazine is capable of accepting magazines of more than 10 rounds. In general, a detachable magazine is a tube, a spring, a bottom to the tube, and a follower on top of the spring. For guns that accept detachable mags, you can just make the tube and spring longer, and you've got more capacity. There nothing inherent about the gun that does (or really can) limit this.

I mean, 1911's in 45ACP are generally thought of as taking 7- or 8-round magazines. But:

All of this just illustrates why having people that do not understand guns draft gun regulations is profoundly stupid!
