Sen. McCain Open to Being Kerry's VP Wed Mar 10, 1:01 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Republican Sen. John McCain allowed a glimmer of hope Wednesday for Democrats fantasizing about a bipartisan dream team to defeat President Bush (news - web sites).

McCain said he would consider the unorthodox step of running for vice president on the Democratic ticket — in the unlikely event he received such an offer from the presidential candidate.

"John Kerry (news - web sites) is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years," McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket. "Obviously I would entertain it."

But McCain emphasized how unlikely the whole idea was.

"It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a pro-life, free-trading, non-protectionist, deficit hawk," the Arizona senator told ABC's "Good Morning America" during an interview about illegal steroid use. "They'd have to be taking some steroids, I think, in order to let that happen."

McCain gained a reputation as a party maverick who appeals to independent voters during his 2000 race against Bush for the Republican nomination. This year, McCain has campaigned for the president and said he would continue to do so.

Unlike some other Republican senators, he hasn't railed against Kerry, a fellow Vietnam veteran. McCain called the Kerry-Bush contest "the nastiest campaign so far that we have seen" and said he preferred campaigning for candidates instead of against their opponents.

Politics makes strange bedfellows.

These guys fling mud for a few years and do lots of negative campaigning.
When the election gets close the formerly bitter rivals kiss and make up for a chance to ride coat tails .

So is Tom Brokaw. Just saw a segment on Fox News.

This is appropriate. He's been doing his best to shape the issues while as a member of the Fourth Estate, so let him drop the pretense of objectivity.

OK, but what does that have to do w/ McCain?...:scrutiny:

He's more in line w/ Kerry's ideas than any conservative's. And I'd expect him to sell out his own state, country, and grandmother to get a shot at the big chair--just like he did in the last election...

Is anybody who has any knowledge of McCain really surprised?

A bi partisan effort is not a bad idea if it truly was bi partisan but John is more Democrat than, most Democrats.

I actually heard the interview in question and you would have to dig pretty deep to come up with "McCain Open To Being Kerry's VP" as the headline. Just another example of how the news is more interested in stirring up a story then reporting the facts.

In the actual interview he told them four times he wasn't interested in being Kerry's VP - even going so far out of the way to repeat "there is no scenario" that I thought the audio track was looping when it was really just McCain repeating it over and over. The part where he says he would entertain it is after the interviewer asked him for the fifth time "So you wouldn't even entertain it?"

He also goes on to state that he will be campaigning for George Bush in 2004 in the same interview... notice all the facts they had to leave out to create this non-story?

As for Brokaw, that was a joke. I believe his reply was something to the extent of "I am only interested in the top position on the ticket" or some similar attempt at humor.

I have no problem with wishing McCain out of office as a Senator; but this story bears no relation to the truth.

"If that happens, won't ole Johnny boy be
changing ships in mid-stream? Surely, his
dad taught him better than that."

Not really. McCain's only a Republican in name. In reality he's one hell of a lot closer to socialist, which fits in well with the Democratic mantra that he espouses.

"Kinda proves the theory that McCain is actually a Dem, doesn't it?"

He's worse than that. He's a traitor. At least now the Democrats know they can't trust him, either.

I think this is a case of the ‘experts’ trying to spice the headlines during a lull in the action.

McCain, for all his other faults, staked his entire political identity on campaign finance reform. Kinda hard to balance this rumor with 527 funding groups McCain vs Soros.

But, stranger things have happened.

I won't vote for any ticket that includes McCain. I liked him better than bush back in to 2000 primaries, back when he was pro gun. I asked his opinions on gun control and got a very pro gun letter. Then he statrted his gun show loophole BS. So, basically, he lied to my face.

Screw him.

To his credit McCain did vote against the Boxer-Fineswine-Schumer-Benedict_Warner AWB reauthorization amendment to S.659/S.1805 (the Lawful Commerce in Firearms Protection Act) last week.
