Senate approves amendment requiring handgun safety locks

I'd be less worried if I hadn't seen the government mess up even the simplest legislation time and time again. Let's hope we don't end up with 15-pound contraptions permanently attached to our guns, which now have to be covered entirely in reflective tape. I would be joking if I hadn't seen powersports-related legislation this far fetched occur already. Never underestimate the stupidity of an elected official.

So what we have is a pretty nice indirect government subsidy to MasterLock...anybody know how much they've given to the campaign funds of various Senators?

And who has that picture of a fire extinguisher with the trigger lock on it? I think some fax machines need exercising.

I have to agree with Greg Bell. I live in cali and I have to buy a gun lock every time I make a gun purchase. It pisses me off but it really isn't a big deal. Plus if these will save the gun companies from these crazy lawsuits so be it. All it will take is some jury in say Los Angeles to award a "zillon" dollar settlement against your favorite gun company and they won't be selling anything anyway. We just have to toss the antis a bone here. As for the locks, they sell a small cable lock here that will fit nicely in your trash can. Mark

I was expecting this lawsuit protection to lower the cost of buying a gun by oh about 5-10 bucks. Now we have to add a gun lock for 5-10 bucks. Good for the companies I guess but this legistlations is lukewarmtastic to me and all the amendments mean I have everything to lose and nothing to gain.

this admendment can still be removed in committee

i think the "pro gun" senators added a few extra appetizers to the menu
that spoiled the appetite for more onnerous admendments.

these extras will be crossed off the bill when the cheque arrives

Here's my move.

Go to www.nrsc.org and use their feedback function.

I sent this:
I saw in the paper today where the Senate of the U. S. passed an amendment to the Gun Manufacturer's Liability Protection bill. The amendment requires a "child lock" on every handgun sold in the U. S. The vote was roughly 70 to 30 in favor.
This means many Republicans voted for the amendment.

Tell all those backstabbers I will not contribute another cent to ANY REPUBLICAN, including the President until that is reversed.

It was gunowners that elected President Bush and the other Republican senatorial and representative candidates in 2000. Now you spit on us. Fine, get elected on your own.

You folks do what you want.

I have a question... if I buy a gun from my local dealer, and they give me the lock; whats to stop me from going right then "oh, look, a spare gun lock. Why, here you go mr. dealer, a donation from me--a gun lock." and then stopping the dealer from say, going "oh, look, a gun lock was just donated. I think on my next firearm sale I will use this one as the mandatory gun lock." I hope you all see where I am going with this. . .:)

Nothing. As long as the weapon was legally yours when you gave him the lock back. Good idea!!

Not to worry? I don't think so. If the Consumer Protection Commission can set the standards you can bet that $2.00 locks won't pass muster. Their "standards" could require something that cost as much as the gun.

Look what the government did with seat belts in cars. In the good-ol'-days before they got into the act you could buy a simple lap-belt as optional equipment (which I did). Then Uncle Sam came in and required shoulder harnesses, ignition interlocks, and finely air bags and whatnot.

The Democrats would love the opportunity to have bureaucrats empowered with the authority to force you to use the locks they mandated.

Look out!!!

First off, this thread being resurected with 3 pages scared me, because I thought I had missed something.

Second, the safetybullet is not something I would want in my handgun. What makes sense is gunproofing your children and keeping the firearms out of the reach of kids. At the very least have a easy-access handgun safe/case with a handprint on it.

Rendering a gun useless buy lodging something in its barrel or cylinder is not something I will ever recommend or do. :scrutiny: I am sorry, but I really dont see a need for your product outside of blissninny havens like Chicago and coastal PRK. Just my $.02.

My two senators couldn't agree.

John Ensign (R-NV) Nay <--I voted for him last time.
Harry Reid (D-NV) Yea <--I didn't vote for him last time.

What if you have no children?

Safetybullet - absolutely ingenious! So to make my gun safe all I need todo is lodge something in the barrel and chamber! Then I have to tap the lodged round out by removing my mag, locking slide open, and banging from the muzzle end with a rod...

So I don't need to worry about where the key to my gun safe is, I just need to worry about where the heck my squibb rod and hammer is????

Doh

safetybullet, it's fine for you to put a simple advertisement and link in the appropriate "For Sale" section.

It's not fine to interject your spam into a discussion. It's okay to put a link to your ad at THR, providing you give a warning along the lines of, "I'm selling a product that might be helpful."

I and one or two others are bad about thread-drift and hijacking. We need all the helpful restraint against bad impulses that you can give us.

Some of the responses that bills like this are "no big deal" are very scary.

This is exactly the sort of thinking that led up to the AWB in the first place.

Just another warning from California. Beware folks these same laws will be introduced by the same type of liberals if they get elected in your state.

Ignorance is bliss isn't it?

Alaska:
Stevens (R) Yea
Murkowski (R) Yea

Stevens' vote dosen't surprise me in the least. Stevens has been lukewarm at best on 2A issues. No pro 2A legislation sponsorship to my knowledge, usually votes with the rest of the AK delegation.
Murkowski OTOH disappoints me. She has had a pretty good voting record so far, but she is up for election this year (appointed to fill her father's senate when he won the governor's race). I wonder if she was pandering to Anchorage blissninnies? Might have to pay a visit to Mike Miller's and Jim Dore's campaigns to get their position on this. :scrutiny:
Oh well, I can pay a couple of bucks more for a cable pad lock as long as they don't tell me I have to use it. No internal crap like Schitt & Worthless or all bets are off.

Know what I did with the cable lock that came with my Glock?

Gave it to my 8 year-old to use on his bike.

:neener: Take that, you leftist nannies!
