Service Grade M1 Garands at the CMP

Yes because alot of flippers want the maximum profit from a minimum investment. Buy cheap, sell inflated.

It is a good thing that CMP has limited the annual purchase number of Garands.

The ease of buying from the CMP needs to be publicized, it would limit the over priced gun show examples.

I'm happy with my Garand collection, the last one I purchased was an M1D Special in April, 2015. So, I'll leave the current CMP inventory to new buyers.

Last purchase was around ten years ago, all Service Grades.

Mostly Greek returns, sprinkled with USGI turn-ins.

Good times.

The point is, for American Citizens, Service Grade M1 rifles are again available through the CMP at a reasonable price.

And the CMP has never really been about marksmanship... like the original DCM.

They are a private corporation, now with a country club.

They would like nothing more that to get out of the retail rifle business and focus on classes and auctions.

Huhh ??????
Been to CMP Talladega?
40ac Country Club Shooting facility. 10 rifle/pistol ranges, Trap range, Sporting Clays. Open to the public…. (When open…. My biggest beef is they’re closed when I prefer and best able to participate, and two+ hour drive to get there.). Closed Monday and Tuesday, except for some matches. CMP store! Often had ammo/components when others didn’t.
The sales support their program/mission. The catch to the rifle/pistol sales is you have to be approved Club/organization affiliated to participate.
Choice to participate is yours.

Addressed the Country Club.

But in-store and mail-order rifle sales, which are their charter, is an expensive operation, both in plant and equipment and skilled labor.

They can't wait to milk their cash cow dry, and then barbecue it.

That's why the volume sales, up from one/ea./lifetime.

Small operation, just for their classes and club guests and events, and the country club itself.

The COO of the CMP once said that they sell more M1 rifles to Citizens in the State of California than All Other States Combined.

How are they supporting their "Marksmanship" mission there, or anywhere else outside of Talladega, for that matter?

The Appleseed Group does exponentially more.

Do not be so hasty on calling CMP out for not supporting marksmanship.

Just last year CMP came to my Virginia club for a four day weekend of instruction and competition. A day and a half on pistol competition, and two days on Hi Power rifle competition. The amazing point is that the CMP bubbas supplied electronic scoring targets, Beretta M9s and AR rifles, along with the requisite ammunition.

The CMP team does ten of these workshops every summer. I respectfully submit that CMP in fact does support marksmanship outside of Anniston.

You will be able to find about half of them on GB in a month or two for double the price. No thanks.
CMP M1 program is not really about civilian marksmanship
I think you are right about that. These are really good prices and M1 Garands that are average are going for 3-4K on the gun sale sites.

Good to hear, and stand by my statement.

I purchased a special grade garand years ago, CMP is a good organization. I like the garand rifle and prices, the 1911 are to high will never purchase one of them through cmp. They provide lessons and competitions but are not as convenient for most people to attend. I earned my rifleman patch from appleseed years ago. Appleseed provides local training, no competitions (except with yourself). The two organizations are about marksmanship and will make you a better shot.

I personally bought several Garands from the CMP in the late 90s early 2000s luck of the draw and got some nice ones. All of them were shooters and I shot them a lot. There has always been those that for one reason or another or disgruntled with the organization. There was always rumblings of how the CMP let certain folks in the GCA have first choice when new shipments came in. I really don't care what they do as long as they get these onto the public. The CMP has done a lot of good regardless of opinions. People today do not want to or can't meet the simple requirements. Fast forward, I have sold many of mine in the last couple of years cause I just can't see to shoot them anymore. No sense letting them ride the back of the safe. Made good money to in doing so. Now flame on for selling at a nice profit...ymmv

I shoot High Power at a CMP range in Texas, with matches sanctioned by the CMP and results recorded and managed by the CMP.

They’re a hellava lot better at it than the NRA too.

The Great State of Texas apparently has - one.

The State of California has none.

@Gun-Reck

You rhetorically asked “where are they supporting marksmanship outside of Talladega” and I offered an example.

I’m not a spokesman for the CMP and don’t know the location all of their ranges. Suffice to say that it’s more than you were implying.

Have you bothered to look at the CMP website? They have a search function, just put your zip code in and it will show you all the CMP affiliated clubs in your chosen radius.

https://thecmp.org/clubs/search-clubs/

I typed in the L.A. zip code and got dozens.

Look up "thecmp.org" and go to "Compete" and then go: "CMP Travel Games".
There are Eastern, Western, New England and Talladega matches. Look in "Matches" for the Camp Perry Matches.

Went to the CMP website and clicked on California, and got nothing, and only one for Texas.

Found a lot of affiliates, like BoyScouts and 4-H, but that may be analogous to nascar branding, same with legacy CMP/DCM service rifle matches that are actually NRA.

Did find a range, though, high-end with a six year membership wait-list, that had actual CMP marksmanship courses and matches open to the public, which was encouraging.

I don’t mean to be argumentative but you keep making statements that are contrary to the facts.

The CMP has nothing to do with the NRA. There’s no such thing as a CMP match that’s actually sanctioned by the NRA. They are separate.

The CMP is not a brand. It has requirements that must be met and maintained in order for a range or club to be certified and affiliated.

Contrary to you assumptions, the CMP does quite a bit to support marksmanship across the country and are better stewards of competitive matches than the NRA. I shoot both, have a High Master ranking in both, so I have some experience to back up my opinion.

Just going by what is found by looking.

Very few CMP Marksmanship programs outside of the country-club.

Several CMP/DCM advertised service rifle matches that are actually NRA.

Other than that - it is what it is.

But the thread is RE: their Service Grade M1 Rifles, which they do advertise in a simple and coherent manner.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Mostly Boy-scout troop and 4-H club affiliations - is pretty much Nascar branding.

They should advertise their Marksmanship programs better.

Just a curious question, what is the better store to visit in real life? And say if you do order something to be shipped which one does it ship from?

Believe that all Mail-order comes from the South Store in Anniston.

As for which to visit? Probably the closest one, but believe that the South Store is bigger.

Been over a decade since going there, and that was at the old location.

Might try the CMP site.

Yeah, M1s at the North Stores seem to alternate between being either under-supplied or sold out.

Pretty unrelated, but I'm really depressed that I live in Minnesota sometimes. Too far away from Anniston and the CMP store. Too far away from Atlanta and BLADE Show, or BLADE Texas. We just killed private firearms sales.

It's the worst.

Thanks to the OP I was able to get my application in for a service grade M1. Came today and is in great shape. Can't wait to shoot it. I think $900 was a fair price in today's market and it won't be for sale any time soon. They are sold out again.
