That happens all the time because in California typically the county sheriff determines whether we are allowed to exercise our Second Amendment rights.

A number of those county sheriffs are getting 'encouragement' from lawsuits or pre-litigation demand letters. Elections also seem to be helping some.

It's always good to see some progress on self defense rights access, the lack thereof was one of the bigger reasons I left in 2005 after 13 years of putting up with the politics.

The thing to do is contact CalCCW.com and query those folks. This map was updated in 12-2010 so things could have changed since then.
Contacting a local gun club or a savvy gun shop can give you the low-down also.

It certainly is, but as noted some are worse, some are better.
For example Orange County went from being one of the best high population pro issue locations under the Sheriff later convicted.
To being quite anti-gun under the replacement.
People that have permits find themselves unable to renew them when they expire, and concealed carry ceases for most of the county.
Sacramento became good though, another dense population place.
Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego county combined for example contain 43% of the population according to census data.

But the square miles of all three of those counties is 9,050.16 square miles out of 155,959.34 square miles.
Or less than 6% of the entire state by land area.
The areas immediately around Oakland/San Francisco and Sacramento combined contain a similar amount of people and area.
Most of the people and the jobs are there.
The rest of the state is rather sparsely populated.
But they are still subject to all the laws, taxes and other regulations set by the people within that tiny land mass.
It would be like New York city and New Jersey combined telling the rest of the East Coast what they could and could not do.
Somewhere around 10% by land area of the state tells everyone what can be done in the other 90%.
CCW though is an exception, in that the other 90% of the state is allowed to decide itself, or rather the current sheriff of their county does.
A handful of counties don't dictate what they will do as is done with the other laws on the books.
In that way the current situation benefits a lot of people, though obviously shall issue statewide would be better.

Contacting a gunshop is usually a good way to get your ear stuffed full of FUD!!

That's why I said a savvy gun shop. In areas where there are ways for the average citizen to go through a process to obtain a CCW, one of the sources of where to go can be the local gunny. A good gun club would be better but it certainly depends on where you are.
We learned about the Ukiah Gun Club's CCW class from a local FFL and we were already members of the club.
