Shipping handguns 2 day air via FedEx or UPS: which is cheaper?

If you, a nonlicensee, ships a firearm to a licensee for repair or replacement of the same kind or type, Federal law permits the direct return to you. Be aware that some licensees refuse to ship any firearm to a nonlicensee even though its allowed. Some states prohibit such direct return.

If you have your dealer ship that firearm for repair/replacement, it would be returned to him. No 4473/NICS is required to return to you.
Thank you

"All he has to do...."?

And shipping a firearm with Adult Signature is plain stupid. USPS/FedEx/UPS can leave it on the curb.

And leaving it on the "curb" is real intelligent??

Ya ya, front porch whatever m no such thing as porch pirates?

Well, USPS regs now require our mailboxes to be "on the curb".
Sorry....that should have read "withOUT Adult Signature"............waaaay to many firearms are shipped without any sort of signature required on delivery. Whats really bad is when someone ships an NFA firearm without any signature required, to the wrong address and the letter carrier delivers it to your neighbor and leaves the package on top of his brick mailbox.....I'n talking to you Rebel and Cotton Branch.:cuss:

My FFL says he will only charge me postage for this service (I’m going to give him some dough though). Thanks for the advice.

Yup. A Medium Flat Rate Box is $13.20 and will hold most handguns. I have a USPS account, so I print the label, take the open box with the gun and label to the FFL. All he has to do is drop his license in the box, seal it, stick the label on and drop it off at the Post Office. Even if the FFL charges you $25 (mine charges $10), you're out less than $40.

The Overnight, Second Day shipping in my area is horrendously expensive.

I have also done it this way for years.. Heck the mail person just picks it up at the shop. No need to go to the post office. And yes for those folks out there that like pick nits, the FFL had a From 1508 on file with the PO. He even looks at the gun to get the serial number:what:

Oh yes, I forgot about the Form 1508. When I still had my FFL, I shipped handguns USPS exclusively. The first time I took one to the Post Office with a filled-out 1508, they had no idea what to do with the form. They actually had to ask the station manager.

My Walther LP2's seals wore out and the North American service center is in Canada.
They told me to mail it with a customs declaration form that it was being sent for repair and would be returned to me.
Postal clerk said Eeek! Postmaster said it looked like a gun to him.
Trudge, trudge, trudge. Form 1508 from FFL, and off it went.

One thing to keep in mind too is if the clerk is knowledgeable. I've gone to the Fedex location before and they wouldn't only ship a handgun the absolute fastest method available. Not just air but next day early morning air or whatever they call it. Quoted rate was nearly $100.

The local UPS store I've never shipped a gun from but they actually have a "conceal carry welcome" sign on their front door so I at least feel they'd be knowledgeable about it. These days though on the rare occasion I need to ship a gun, I have the local FFL do it USPS. Last time I think it was like $30-35 total and they even handled boxing it up.

You CANNOT use a "UPS store" or a Fedex/Kinko's Office location; you must use their depot locations

I shipped several pistols through a FedEx store location in the last 8 months. Full disclosure was given as to the contents and there were no issues.

My understanding was that those locations were still franchisee-owned.
FedEx Office has always been corporate owned/managed.
You may see "FedEx" signage outside a print shop, office supply, grocery, hardware store........that just means they are a third party retailer who can ship for you.....but are specifically not permitted to ship firearms by FedEx.
