I'm curious if anyone has ever encountered this before, I recently sold a firearm(.45 G-21)to a fellow in another state. I contacted his ffl, who proceeded to insist that I ship him the pistol USPS priority mail. I was under the impression that this would violate the GCA.

Well?

That is the best way to ship, but YOU can't do it unless you have an 01 or 02 or 07 FFL (03 and 06 aren't good enough, unfortunately)

It might be cheaper to take it to your local gun dealer and have him mail it for you for a small fee, rather than deal with UPS or FedEx.

That is a bad idea. Non-licensees may not ship handguns USPS. It may even be unwise to bring one onto USPS property.

So it is legal, just as long as the ffl is 01. 02, or 07. I had no idea.

It is legal as long as the shipper (that's you) has a 01, 02, or 07 FFL. I'm not sure what the recipient has to have also, if anything -- 01, 02, or 07 would certainly do it.

The receiving FFL was probably under the impression that YOU were an FFL. Otherwise, he was way out of line, because mere mortals can't send handguns via USPS.

I thought that exact thought, however I told him I was a private individual, and I inquired of him whether he would accept a shipment from such. He knew, its become apparent that he is/was ignorant of the law, or perhaps he was distracted to some degree and mistakenly informed me as to its legality.

He knew, I told him it was illegal, but he insisted that it was not, he told me that the priority mail carton was almost an exact fit for the Glock, insure it for $500.00 and just ship it. I shipped it UPS.
