shipping primed brass - I promise I searched

I have some questions about shipping primed brass. I searched this forum and came away with different answers:banghead:. I've read, USPS is ok. No restrictions on primed brass. I've read, UPS/FEDEX only with ORM-D label. I've also read, UPS/FEDEX with no label needed.

UPS or FedEx with the ORM-D sticker ... very easy presuming you don't get an ignorant clerk. Not USPS for primers or cartridges ... spent brass only for them.

Here is the straight scoop on primed brass.

Primed brass is not regulated in domestic transportation per 49CFR, Special Provision 50, in the Hazardous Materials Table. It is not ORM-D and no marking or labeling of any kind is required.

PART 172—HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TABLE, SPECIAL PROVISIONS, HAZARDOUS MATERIALS COMMUNICATIONS, EMERGENCY RESPONSE INFORMATION, TRAINING REQUIREMENTS, AND SECURITY PLANS
Subpart B—Table of Hazardous Materials and Special Provisions

§ 172.102 Special provisions.

50: Cases, cartridge, empty with primer which are made of metallic or plastic casings and meeting the classification criteria of Division 1.4 are not regulated for domestic transportation.

However, do not ship by air as both UPS and FedEx follow the International Air Transport Association Regulations for air shipments which do not contain the exemption that is in 49 CFR.

Even though it is not regulated, primed brass is specifically prohibited from mailing by the USPS.

I received primed shotgun shells all the time via Fedex and UPS. I've never seen a "special" label of any kind. I had some powder shipped in one time and it cost an extra $25.00 for hazardous material and it was labeled as such.

I have no experience with having primers by themselves shipped in, but I'd imagine it is the same as shipping powder.
