I tried on another thread that was talking about shipping, no takers.. thought I'd make a new one.

I noticed on GunBroker their shipping info for UPS now includes:
UPS does not allow shipment of firearms FROM an unlicensed person (even to an FFL), unless the stated reason for the firearm shipment is for repair or modifications.
I've got a shotgun to mail out to a THR member, and I'm trying to figure out the best way (post 9-11). From what I can remember, shotguns and rifles could be shipped UPS ground (allowing more $$ for insurance ;-).

I'd rather keep the cost down....

I've got several FFL friends, so I could go that route.. but I don't want to call in any favors ;-)

Well, it may very well be a government monopoly but it's the only government entity that doesn't suck money off the taxpayer base. They are totally financially independent. Much like all governemnt agencies should be.

I prefer not to use the Government monopoly ;-).

Dont want to be a dick, but its a monoploy for a reason. It has nothing to do with the government.

It certainly does have everything to do with the U.S. gubmint. They gave the USPS exclusive rights to put mail in your mailbox.

The USPS has exclusive rights because it is run by the government. The mail system is a monopoly because no company could run it and make money. Companies would be going out of business left and right, there would be many small companies that would make it difficult for them to link and keep the mail going. It has to be a monopoly, it wont work any other way.

So tell them it going to the FFL for repair. How could they prove otherwise? It's not the law, just their stupid policy.

BTW, here's all the pertinent info from UPS, USPS and BATF:
