Hi all, hope your day is full of great things. So last week I bought a lb of sw sbr socom to try in 300 blk for some 150 gr fusion bullets to try and get better velocities and sd#s as I’ve read and been told that this powder is excellent for 150 gr and it’s pretty cheap as well. The first test I did with it was with some Winchester power point pulls that I have just to get a idea of how it would perform. I started at the recommended range, I believe 18.5 gr up to 20.5 gr in .5 increments at a oal of 2.107, ginex srp, shot out of my 10.3” sbr suppressed. Well, my calculations were off and the oal was supposed to be 2.170 and got pressure signs and extraction burrs on all of them but no flattened primers, Woops! The velocity and sd was incredible, 1930 fps on the 18.5 gr load and 2034 fps on the 20.5 gr load, all with single digit sd numbers. Went back to the bench and loaded more with the correct oal and again great velocity and single digit sd numbers but only slight swipes on the hottest load, 2012 fps and 5sd. I thought, this stuff is great for 150s how about some 110s. Loaded some vmax 110s with 20,20.2,20.5,20.8 gr at my usual 2.060 oal and same result, top end load was 2241 fps avg with a 3 sd and decent accuracy, almost as good as my normal h110 load. So now I have some subs loaded up to try with 220 Berrys and 190 sub x, we’ll see how it goes hopefully tomorrow if I can get out to shoot. Can this really be a do it all 300 blk powder, who has tried it and did you have velocities and sd numbers like this?

If you have a good bolt, waiting for primers to tell you to much is a bad plan. Burrs are an indicaton. Swipes is max in my book, burrs is to much.

Yes, I agree. From time to time I see swipes but primers don’t really tell much in a AR, at least not the 41s or the ginex I’ve been using or of course if they’re flattened like a pancake, lol. I should have noticed but I loaded all the first ones in one mag and had my brass catcher on. When I opened up the brass catcher and saw the burrs, it freaked me out a bit but thankfully my bolt/gun is built for full power loads. The second test went much better, over 2000 fps from a 150 and 10.3” is cooking!

Yes, it's fantastic. I use both SBR Socom and SW Blackout, depending on what's available. The two powders are very close. SOCOM is a special order powder they developed for SBR (Souther Ballistic Research) and is optimized for 458, and gives better performance for that caliber. I would just stick with SBR Socom, but it's not always available, but for 300 BLK SW Blackout is very very close. I have worked up loads for both powders for both calibers.

Did some more load work ups with it and it’s fantastic! Luckily, I have access to 8 more lbs of it and I’m going to buy all of it! It’s really interesting that it’s a blend of spherical and stick powder, I took a closer look at it when I spilled a case on my bench, lol! Must be the reason for the low sd #s, I haven’t seen a sd over 14 or es over 25 with every load I’ve tested and most are single digit. 2000 fps from a 150 gr in 300 blk with no major pressure sign still has me sitting on my hands to keep from clapping in joy, lmao!!🤣🤣

Yeah, buy it all while you can. Explosia in the CZ Republic supplies the Lovex/SW powders, and they are currently using most of their production for all the mil buildup in europe (Ukraine War), so it may be a while before more makes it into the country in any huge amounts.

SW powders are plentiful here at a place that won't ship. Socom, blackout , AR and tactical are all useful. Precision is very good to replace Varget. Never had to special order any.

Tested the socom powder again this weekend and this time set my oal correctly. It was 93 degrees out this time so also tested temperature stability and it seems to be really temp stable. This powder is absolutely outstanding! With 150 gr, 110 gr, and 220 gr subsonic, all loads had single digit sd numbers, excellent velocity, and outstanding accuracy! I went to buy all they had and the price increased $12 a lb in 6 days. Still worth it, here’s some chronograph numbers from best loads.
All brass used was once fired LC22 converted trimmed to 1.360 with ginex srp from 10.3” ba Hanson/aero build suppressed with Lahar 30.
110 vmax 2.060 20.5 gr sbr socom 2231 fps avg 14 es 6sd 3/4” groups at 50 yds no pressure signs

150 Winchester power point 2.170 19.6 gr socom 1967 fps avg 12 es 5 sd 0.4” groups at 50 yds no pressure signs. Started seeing pressure signs at 20.6 gr but not bad like before, only faint swipes on case.

220 Berrys sp 2.11 10.3 gr socom 1047 fps avg 11 es 4 sd 3/4” group at 50 yds no pressure signs of course, never seen them with subsonic.

Good stuff, going to load a big batch of 150s to stash away for another day.
