Shooting deck

No way to get a bucket down there, so the trimming has been done with a shotgun and rifle.

I have had that same problem myself and built this contraption.

IMG_20140830_114128_594-1_zpsllsslc9e.jpg

A cotter pin through the flash hole of a 45 ACP case (don't even have to drill out some of the large flash hole Winchester cases. Adapt an air blower and fishing reel to PVC can aim and shoot over offending branches then go from string to rope and even to cable if the branches are large enough. Then pull them down from a distance, if you don't want to take the entire tree down.

If your in an area where you can trim with a rifle reeling a container of tannerite up to the branch would work too. We have sheared 2-3" cedar trees in half before at the base with the stuff and it's entertaining in and of itself but don't shoot rifles into the air as a general rule where I am at.

Very cool Walkalong.

So if you build a roof for it later, just a thought, you could build a brass collecting deflection wall that runs off the right side. And halfway behind the shooter. If you made a bit of a trough with a hole, then a piece of rain gutter down spout could be used to deposit brass in a collection box below and in front of the platform. Any brass that didn't make it into the trough could be easily swept in with a broom, and clean up would be a breeze. Then grab your brass and start a tumbling.

Heck, you could even hang short lengths of gutter on the roof to draw rain water away from the platform so erosion isn't as much of an issue.

That is of course true, but shooting at a branch in the way from up top at the deck still has a lot of hill in the way on a miss, and even a deflection has lost a lot of energy and is still likely to hit the hill. I used a 9MM carbine. Anything low enough I used the shotgun with bird shot. In my youth I would have just scampered up there and cut them off. I have given up 99% of tree climbing.

I left the right side 4x4s high so I could hang a tarp etc off of them to catch/knock down brass. When I was finishing the shelf I laid a plank up across them and it gave me the idea to make a one plank shelf up there as well.

Yeah, I don't like being higher than I can jump myself.

Tree trimming with tannerite.

Never posted this one before but with an almost word for word quote, I had to even though the camera filmed it sideways.

Well, these recent pics were taken down the hill from the deck and a bit to the right. All kinds of things pass through the bottom/natural drain. I have a night pic from last year were a ten point was tussling with an eight point. Just pure luck they tangled right in front of the camera. Got three or four pics with them horn to horn, and one good one of them just standing there facing each other. I never saw the ten point in a pic by a feeder. Smart deer. IMG_0015.jpg IMG_0035.jpg

No plans for a roof any time soon.
You could fashion mounting points for tarp (with slight slope) for shade/rain cover. Cheap, functional and easily removable. Maybe even eye bolts with bungee cords.

Nice looking shooting bench.

My parents can shoot off their wrap around covered porch rain or shine and herds of deer and wild turkeys pass by several times a day. I gotta drive like 30 minutes for my shooting spots and set up tarp off the suburban. Jealous of those who could shoot on their property but one shooting spot has a nice view of the ocean as a consolation. :D

I could sit there all day & never fire a shot .
Yea, it's a great place to just sit.

There is a lot of shade, so a roof isn't a big deal. Maybe someday, but too many other projects first. :)

A look through a scope. Not bad for a phone pic through a scope.

Finished the deck up today and actually shot a little bit.

Looks great. Hows that AR shoot? Make , model? How much to join "Walkalong Gun Club." :D My club , with 1500 members is getting to dangerous. To many new shooters that dont know were to keep the muzzle pointed and not handle weapons while people are down range.

AR Stoner barrel, Mega lower, G&T parts kit sans trigger I had (I think that is where it went), Samson Evolution float tube, Timney trigger I bought on sale, don't remember which gas block and tube. Shoots pretty well, nothing special. Under an inch with a good load.

If you make the drive, shooting is free. :)

Today I shot a Colt OMM that was converted from .22 Lr to .22 Mag. Not well either. I had to polish the chambers a good bit to get it to release brass easily. Had to tap (Pound) it out before. It had a scope on it, but came with the original rear sight. But because of that I got it cheap. It rang the 16" steel plate at 105 yards every time I exercised good trigger control. 4 or 5 per cylinder, and that was with cheap ammo. The premium offerings shoot much tighter groups.

It's nice having a flat deck, places to put stuff, and a steady table to shoot from.

The view from behind the target, a closer look at the deck from behind the target, the extra steel, and the transportation. An 80CC Grizzley. Very handy. IMG_20160807_162309_797.jpg IMG_20160807_162325_272.jpg IMG_20160807_162459_920.jpg IMG_20160807_162520_156.jpg

Don't you mean for when you run out of fruit and veggies to shoot? :D I had a friend of a friend who gave us the "bad" produce from a store instead of tossing it. If I had a place like that to shoot it, I'd do it more often.

Surface Danger Zones - Shooting range safety.

http://energy.gov/ea/downloads/range-design-criteria-june-4-2012
Boundaries of SDZs must be posted with permanent signs warning
persons of the danger of the live-fire range and prohibiting trespassing.
The signs must be posted in a way that will ensure a person cannot enter
the SDZ without seeing at least one legible sign.
Our range is marked , something like this. Plus a heavy wire is run thru the woods at waist level.

Well, I was 58 before I was able to acquire a nice "back yard". A year and a half later I finally built the deck. :)
Where's the house it's supposed to be attached to....:p

Nice setup; I use a cheap plastic table and a plastic sawhorse for targets at the sandpit at SWMBO's folks farm....

Nothing but green-eyed envy here for your setup. (It's just a leeeetle too far to drive on the weekends for me from Minnesota.)

Just to torture myself I imagine what a day at YOUR range might be like.

"I'm going to shoot really fast today to function test my semi-auto. Anybody mind?"

"I'm going to shoot really sloooooow today to test out some target ammo and I want to eliminate the gun-heating-up thing. Anybody mind?

"I'm going to screw around with my guns and some tools on the bench. Anybody mind?"

"I'm going to have more than one gun uncased. Anybody mind?"

"I'm going to go check my targets a lot today. Anybody mind?"

And so on. Like somebody said, your living the good life.
Good luck.

Walkalong

That is one sweet set-up you have there! You've definietly created a little part of shooter's paradise with your range and deck! Thanks for posting the additional photos too (liked the one through the scope with your cellphone)!
