This is definitely not helping our case and the news is already doing their part to try and portray the weapon as a military style assault weapon. it cannot be a rifle or something like that but it has to be deemed an assault weapon apparently. Click the link and go watch the video. Pay special attention to the video when it gets around 2:51 of play. Interesting.

Then there is also the shooting that occurred in Canada...not good. As far as the shooting in Canada goes, "Don't they have very strict gun laws?" Wouldn't this help argue the case that all gun laws do is take guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens? I mean criminals are going to get their hands on them one way or another despite the gun laws as the laws will only pertain to those who follow them.

No 10/22 for sure. This happened in my hometown and from my understanding it was a man with an AR15 a bad attitude and really bad aim. Thankfully though the BG is now in custody. Most of the injuries were minor and from brick shards causing minor cuts but unfortunately a couple took direct hits and are in critical condition. It's a bad situation for sure (and God be with those who were seriously injured) but it was not the slaughter the news is trying to make it out to be.

Being from central AL myself, this is all I've heard today. What makes it worse, local news just showed snapshots of this guy posing with his firearms. One of them was an AK variant with a drum mag and the other was a MAC style pistol. Bad publicity for sure.

From the lastest news report I read (07-17-12)...

Police saying suspect wanted to die, so he shot up the bar in order to get cops to arrive and shoot him. But, after shooting up the bar, he got scared and ran away. He then confessed what he did to his family and his sister called the cops. When the cops arrived, he surrendered without incident.

Of the 17 victims...
12 were treated & released for minor wounds (shrapnel).
3 were hospitalized in fair condition (shrapnel).
1 was hospitalized in serious condition (gunshot).
1 was hospitalized in critical condition (gunshot).

Back in the day I have responded to calls like this (though not of this magnitude)

Troubled individuals who think the boys in blue will put the out of their misery.

The media formula to blame the gun is reprehensible. These shooters are poor tortured souls with a warped reasoning. The mental health system in the greatest country in the world is in shambles.
In my county we spend more on animal control than mental health.

Yet the media defaults to the gun.

I am sick and tired of liberal media types using rightious indignation about contoling a piece of metal and ignoring the mentally ill.

Many of these shooters are known to the system, ala chou, Yet PC attitudes, and inadequete systems for identification and treatment allow these incidents to happen.

Where is the hue and cry to control wacko's instead of guns.

Shame on you main stream media.

I agree with you bikerdoc.

The problem with our mental health system is that there are no common standards or guidelines to follow in indentification and treatment of the truly mentally ill. The current so called system is often abused by unscupulous self serving and politically motivated entities in order to deprive people of their basic and constitutional rights under the shadow of due process.

The only way for a person to get help is either for that person to voluntarily seek and submit to it or for that person to exhibit violent and dangerous behavior.
