This one did not involve students, or assault weapons, but it'll probably still be used against us when it comes time for those bills for sunset.

Man kills woman, himself in shooting outside Salt Lake City high school

By Matt LaPlante
The Salt Lake Tribune

A man killed his estranged wife then himself this morning across the street from Salt Lake City's West High.
No students were involved in the altercation, which occurred before school began and resulted in the deaths of cafeteria worker Marisela Lavalle and her husband, Federico Cervantes-Lavalle.
According to police, Cervantes-Lavalle, 52, approached his wife as she was coming out of a faculty parking lot north of the school, where the woman had worked for several years. Witnesses said a verbal altercation and a brief struggle ensued before the man displayed a .38 caliber handgun and shot three times.
Lavalle, 39, was shot in the chest, shoulder and head. Cervantes-Lavalle then pointed the gun at his own head and fired a fourth and final bullet, according to Salt Lake City Police detective Dwayne Baird.
Police said Lavalle had been living away from her husband for about six weeks. The nature of their estrangement was not clear, however, and a search of Utah court records showed no history of domestic violence nor a record of divorce proceedings.
Baird said the woman with whom Lavalle had been living recently reported "some psychological abuse, yelling and arguing," but no physical abuse between Cervantes-Lavalle and his wife.
Patrol officers arrived in response to a 911 emergency call at 6:07 a.m. and closed off the street and surrounding area before most students arrived, Baird said. Windows facing the patch of grass where Lavalle and her husband fell were shuttered and students were encouraged to stay away from the north side of the school.
