I am looking for feedback on schools that will refresh/teach shooting skills that would pertain to snipers, police or military. I live in Maryland and would not mind a long drive and a couple of days in a hotel, but prefer not to fly. I have searched online and found several but just looking to see what other people suggest. Any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

There's Blackwater. They're expensive. Never been there myself, but the word is they are an extensive facility, very professional.. They are in North Carolina. I don't know how far that is from you. There's a few others, but I'm not sure of any that might be closer to you.

Don't overlook schools that offer "precision rifle" courses. That is just the politically correct way of describing a sniper course. Sometimes they describe it as a course to build long range hunting accuracy...yah right! but that's part of the game.

HAVEN'T BEEN TO ANY MYSELF AS OF YET, BUT HERE ARE A FEW ON YOUR SIDE OF THE COUNTRY. *CROSSHAIRS INC. @ WWW.CROSSHAIRS.ORG. *NATIONAL TACTICAL OFFICERS ASSOC. @ WWW.NTOA.ORG. *SIGARMS ACADEMY @WWW.SIGARMSACADEMY.COM THE SITE FIREARMS TRAINING CENTER @WWW.SHOOT-AT-THE SITE.COM. AND SNIPERCRAFT @WWW.SNIPERCRAFT.ORG HAVE READ ABOUT THESE ONLY, BUT THE'RE SUPPOSE TO BE REAL GOOD. CHECK IT OUT. LET US KNOW.
LOTS OF GREAT SHOOTERS OUT THERE.

Operational tactics

Operation Tactics has class's in Haggerstown Maryland. Stuard Meyers is the owner runs great schools. Center Mass runs a couple of schools in CT each year. Crosshairs in NH runs some fine schools also.

I think thunder ranch offers a long distance precision rifle class, as well as their various pistol and urban setting classes

Front Sight teaches a great practical rifle class - it is also dirt cheap. If you google - front sight certificates - you can find one for $80. That means the price of a 4 day course is $80. What that adds up to is that the full trip to front sight including ammo, hotel, airfare, etc is cheaper than the course fee at Blackwater.

Badlands without a doubt.

You can stay for free at the dorm there too. The people are awesome. They are the real thing too.

Tactical Response has a sniper course coming up in April in Camden, Tennessee. Lodging is free in our team room. There will be two instructors. One is an active SWAT sniper with a mid-sized city SWAT team and the other is a Marine sniper with a few years in Iraq with the Marines and as a civilian contractor.

April 17 - 21 Sniper Camden, TN
More details are available in the course description:

"Front Sight teaches a great practical rifle class - it is also dirt cheap."

EDIT: Sorry about my previous post, I didn't read that carefully enough.
I agree that the Frontsight Practical Rifle class is a great class. And, you can take it for cheap. But, it isn't a precision rifle class/sniper type rifle class. You only shoot out to 200 yards from field type positions.
Frontsight does offer a Precision Rifle class, but you can't take it on one of those cheap certificates, and Precision Rifle has a pre-requisite (sp ?): you have to have taken Practical Rifle AND recieved a distingished graduate certificate (in Practical Rifle) before you can take Precision Rifle. FWIW, I have taken Practical Rifle at Frontsight three times and have never managed to get the Distinguished Graduate certificate. DG requires you to get a score of 90% or better on the final skills test. One of the three times I shot a score of 90% then lost a couple points on the weapons manipulations portion of the test putting me below 90% (weapons manipulations = three types of malfunction clearances and the two types of reloads).

You're almost next door to Storm Mountain - get thyself hence!

I did the Long Range Rifle 1 & 2. Very good.
The sniper classes are well regarded. Seems it's _the_ place to go for such instruction.

Go where the military guys go...Dave Lauck's Small Arms Training Academy in Wyoming, Lauck is one of the best precison instructors in the world; he's match director for the International Tactical Rifle Championships, which is in effect a military R&D lab, and he's constantly working with military shooters. Dave aso just met Cooper's 20-20-20 challenge — 20 rounds into a 20 inch circle in 20 seconds...at 1000 yards!

+1 on Storm Mountain. At the end of Long Range I, I was regularly hitting man-sized targets out to 750 yards. I also took "Close Precision Engagement" (aka "urban sniper"), which isn't normally offered to the public. The focus there was more on LEO sniper skills (observation, logging, shoot-no-shoot scenarios, etc) than on learning to shoot long distance.

A few years ago I was a role-player for Sniper III as a hostage. That is a rough course. YOU WILL GET WET.

Another plug for Storm Mountain, especially given your location. Did LRR 1 and 2 a couple of years ago. Excellent training. You'll need a partner, though. All long range rifle and sniper training is done in sniper/spotter pairs.

Varmint Hunter magazine had an article about a place in Orgegon that was strictly ballistics. Slope, dope, wind, and written assignments at night.
900 for 5 days

Could someone give a brief explanation of what is taught at one of these classes ?
Is is just long range shooting or is their fieldcraft etc. taught ?
