As some of you know, I have been very impressed with my XD-9. I didn't want to like it and I am not normally a plastic gun kind of guy. I have to give credit where credit it due though, for the price, the XD-9 is a good gun.

I took both of the above guns to the range to get things sorted out between them. I have been talking up the XD as one of the best combat type pistols I have shot in a while. I have an old Beretta 92G police trade in that I have shot but not as much as I should. I know what Berettas are like because I have had a 92FS for many years and it has never let me down. I got the 92G about 6 months ago and haven't shot it seriously yet. I have plinked with it and played around at the range but I haven't shot it for accuracy or speed yet. I also have never compared it directly to another gun.

The 92G is faster comming out of recoil than the XD. I think this is due to it being a heavier gun mostly. The XD does have a high bore axis but I am not sure if it is any higher than the Beretta.

I think I need to mention that my 92G has finger grip Houges and a 1911 14# hammer spring instead of the stock spring. It makes a big difference in grip and control and trigger.

I was able to hit a little better with the Beretta in draw and fire double taps even with the DA/SA trigger transition. I practice the first shot DA and second shot SA a lot so it is not a big handycap for me anymore. The Beretta just seemed to come up to the target more naturally and faster. I know this is probably due to my history with the 92FS but it is still a fact. In slow fire, both were about the same which surprised me. I had it in my mind that the XD was more accurate for some reason.

With the legendary reliabilty of the Beretta and the fact that it did just as well if not better in all my shooting tests, I would pick that one if my only choices were the XD or the Beretta. The only thing the XD has on the Beretta is smaller size and weight. If I were going to CCW one of these, the XD would be much easier to hide. If I were going to carry one on duty, the Beretta would get the nod.

I actually did carry my Beretta 92fs on duty when I worked for an armored car company. I swtiched from a SIG 220 because I found I could control the Beretta better in one handed rapid fire shooting. I also like the idea of having twice as many rounds if I ever got into a shootout. The FMJ 9mm is a much better penetrator than any .45acp is so that was a plus if I had to shoot through a car door. It was a heavy chunk of metal to lug around fully loaded but it was worth it. I grew to love and respect the Beretta more than any other service type pistol I have owned.

It’s funny you should mention the story about your Beretta. I keep thinking that if I had to carry a sidearm as a uniformed police officer, I’d probably opt for the 92FS. That is…if I had to carry a 9mm. I still prefer my USP .45 full size, but the Beretta would be “it” in 9mm. Long barrel, very reliable, and well balanced full magazine or partially loaded magazine. I also have an XD9, but prefer the 92FS.

centurion's balance and look is just right, gets rid of a little bit of the top heavy feel and protruding barrel nob.
