As I approach my birthday, I'd like to find an EDC fixed blade.

Specifications:

1. within the laws of Texas:

"Illegal knife" means a:

(A) knife with a blade over five and one-half inches;
(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;
(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk, stiletto, and poniard;
(D) bowie knife;
(E) sword; or
(F) spear.

2. A rubberized or solid grip... non slip - blood, rain, etc..
3. No serrations
4. Under 100.00 (since it's an EDC...)

I'm leaning toward the TAK 1 by Ontario ..

any other reasonable suggestions?

(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;

Ok, apparently TX knife laws suck. Seriously, a hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown? You can throw about anything you want.

What are you planning on using this for?

With the rest of your criteria I'd throw out the following:

Benchmade Activator
ESEE 3
HK 14100
Buck Big Game Kalinga

I'm sure there will be others along soon. With under 5.5 inches, it's hard.

If you provide a realistic description of what you use a knife for day after day we can help more.

yeah, yeah.. that's just it.. iffen I knew, I'd just go buy the thing..

spent a couple of hours last night cruising the gallary on ebay... discovered a couple of things.. prices vary.. and some people don't know a fixed blade from a folder.

the TAK-1, the springbok, a couple by cold steel, couple of Benchmade.. even the Mora looked good.. I guess I just need to hold one.

Just hungry for some examples I guess.. the pic page thread had some nice ones in it.

@Yo Mama tell me about it !!! from the state where Jim Bowie fought for independence, and Bowie knives are illegal to carry unless hunting ...

I am by no means an expert like HSO.

I have a Spyderco Moran that I really like. It is made with very good steel (VG-10). The kydex sheath can be rotated to adjust the position that is comfortable or applicable to the situation. It is possible to EDC it, but I lean toward folders for that purpose as they are a bit more discrete.

Mora blades a generally very good and a great value for the money.

ESEE knives are very good also. I find them a bit heavy however, but they are close to indestructable under normal use.

thanks!

Basically I'm looking for what may be described as a gentleman's fixed blade.

I'm not looking for a drastic blade design with gutting hooks and blood grooves. I'd like it small enough so that it's not ominous on my belt.

I've got a couple of small ones.. Mini bulldog Lightfoot design, a couple of K.I.S.S knives from CRKT, even an old Ryan Model 7 fixed blade.

The size is about right on the Mini Bulldog, but too thin to work with for a period of time without tiring your hand out.

John Greco makes some excellent small blades at great prices, but I don't know if they'll be pretty enough for you.

The CRKT Minimalist is a well-priced, attractive small fixed blade. If you lived elsewhere, I would suggest the Boker Pocket Bowie.

You could also ask Sam1911 to make a small fixed blade for you. I was looking yesterday at some small knives he's made. There's another knifemaker on THR I wish I could suggest, but it's been 6 months since I paid him to make some small knives for me.

Scrap yard knife company has a new model offerred on their website for $90 +s/h but no sales tax.

Its called the model 511 and I believe it fits your criteria.

No sheath offered at this time though.

I'm looking for what may be described as a gentleman's fixed blade.

See the small hand made Wheeler I picked up for $50 at the Spirit of Steel show. Micarta scales, clear temper line, O1 tool steel. For your $100 price point Gary or Kim can make a slightly bigger fixed blade that will fit in your pocket.

Hso: the upper knife with the brown scales looks like a non-folding version of the old Gerber Bolt-Action, which I always thought would make a good fixed-blade hunting knife. It's very handsome.

I've been carrying a Benchmade Rant lately. For me anyway, it seems to be the perfect size. Not too big. Not too little. I have a custom kydex sheath for it that makes the 9" overall knife disappear under a T-shirt.

Thanks guys..

Now I'm even more confused... :banghead:

Though, with your help and the posting of suggestions, I do have some better idea though..

So for those that have better resources

Overall length - 7-9 inches
Blade length - prefer something 3.5 to 4.0 inches
Carbon or Stainless not picky there..
Drop point
Handle material: micarta, hardwood/laminate. No Bone/Antler/stag/ram
cross draw sheath or horizontal

Maybe what I envision isn't made yet..

isn't there a knife finder guide online?? hehehehe..
