got into a mossberg 500a that had been in a sofft case for a long time, never shot.the barrell was horrible rusted ,cleaned it up,fairly well ,but spotted all up,it is a 28 inch vent rib the end of the barrell is pretty scarred up and the vent rib has been hard to get the rust off,it has dual beads, so could i have it cut back to 20 or 22' or so inches, right after 1st brass mid/bead,would it be cylinder bore ,then so i could deer or hog hunt,slugs/buckshot?the gun shop only charges 30.00 to shorten a barrell to 18.5.but since mine is vent rib 20 or 22.

Even with the vent rib you can go down to 18.5"

The bead can be moved, or the vent rib can be removed, or both.

Yes, it will be cylinder bore and fit for slugs or shot though the accuracy with slugs will fall off some unless you get the ones designed for smoothbore.

the factory brass midbead on the vent rib,is only a few inches in front of the 20"inch mark so thats where i want it cut. how will that mid bead on a vent rib shoot, will it affect the aiming point at all.just wondering ,gues i"ll just have to try it with slugs and buckshot and patturn it.

I would probably put the big bead where the mid-bead is, then. Threads should be the same. That's a tiny reference for shooting moving targets.

good idea, the mid bead is a smaller mid sze brass bead, the end bead is a big round white one.

if you cut the barrel and keep the vent rib then dont forget to bevel (or even smooth down with files) the leading edge of the rib. seen a couple of nasty cuts where people filed and smoothed the barrel properly but had a razor above it!
