Yes. With these other calibers, cartridges.454, 44, 50AE. Is their really a need for them? Me, I would think that would be up to the user. What they need it for for. Choices, that’s what it is.
Look at the 44. Back in the 50’s, when it came out, it went, probably through the same criticism, as what the 460,500 is going through today? Even among the gun community.
The 44 being used specifically for hunting? Where the 38, 357, 9mm, 45 were common in those days. It took over a decade (almost 20 years) for the 44, to become a household name, per say, and not just the revolver (model 29) Eastwood used in the Dirty Harry movies, either. It became known even among the non-gun users. There are users out their, that carry it for CH use in todays world. What has changed since than? In reference, to home defense, CHL, CCW use?
While there are a lot of choices for CHL, CCW, home defense use, even hunting I find it irrelevant if one uses a 9mm or a 500. Other than conceal issues. And for type of game. As far as, over-penetration is a concern, how powerful it is. It goes hand in hand. If one was in that scenario, one would have to be concerned more about the background, what’s behind that object, ones’ shooting at? What’s’ right, more than being a legal issue that one can get into, after the fact.
Now, if you put a gun to my head. And had to pick a 9mm or 454, 460, 500, which someone was going to fire, not only would I rather be that person behind that object, if that was the case. I would pick the 9mm. At the same time, it’s giving me a choice. Death by poison or death by hanging
I was in court one day, where the judge made a statement (pulling it out of context) that “a 22, can travel up to a mile”. Being wise (not being that person, its being told to), and not asking him to elaborate on it. What scenario, he was referring to? My take on it was, no other forces, obstacles acting on it? Or, maybe, a.22, 9mm, 460,500 have one thing in common? Just a guess!
I can now understand why the 22 is not popular for CH, CCW use, too powerful. Can travel up to a mile. More powerful?…excuse me, travels further?, than the 460, and 500 magnums!
The whole point, which is best for defense? Hunting for that matter! My reasoning, behind buying a 500, not as dangerous, as thee “.22……. can travel a mile” wisdom.
So the, “too powerful” garbage, does not hold up … to that judge anyway.
It’s like saying:
Two guys in separate, cars, its 0300 hours (that’s 3 A.M.), road/weather conditions are “clear”, by the way there is a City Ordnance that: “anyone under the age 18 is not allowed out (by himself) after 2300 hours (1 hour before midnight)” one in a
Nido,
Traveling at 40 MPH (legal speed limit 45)
A Corvette,
Traveling at 65 MPH (speed limit was 65 MPH),
Both could not break fast enough to stop
And both hit and kill a pedestrian, in a cross walk. One pedestrian happens to be 17 and one 16. Pedestrians had the right-of-way (green-light)? No witnesses.
Which guy would/should get a lighter sentence? Or off the hook, for that matter?
One does not have to be in law enforcement or the legal profession to understand:
Even if the vehicles’ operator said: “I had a green light”. It does not excuse the fact that one has to look while driving. If there is a pedestrian, in a crosswalk, to STOP! No matter what vehicle you’re in! No matter what speed you’re going at! Whether or not (for the vehicle operator), had the right-of-way!
If that was the case, to get off the hook, I could have done that to my ex-wife, when I had the opportunity.
So, go and get a 460/500 or whatever floats your buoy.
Also, if, anyone, no matter if it’s a long-gun, shotgun, hand-gun, and whatever caliber it be. And, one worries (them-selves to death) about legal ratifications’. Don’t buy a firearm. Except for hunting. And then, do not use it for defense purposes. And do what your state tells you what you have to do. That might be, you have to run away, “retreat”. Any lawyer will tell you that.
I’m glad; I live in a state (Texas), which understands 2A rights and use of “deadly force”.
