Went to the Arizona Game and Fish expo today and shot a S&W 500 for the first time. Plenty of recoil and push but nothing too dramatic. Nice gun/round but I don't think it's anything I need. If I was hunting elephant then maybe but being here in North America, there's no need for one in my arsenal. You guys have at it.

I got to shoot one too, last weekend. What a .....blast..:)

Gary's Gun Shop in Sioux Falls was hosting Smith & Wesson days. S&W had a table full of handguns for interested customers to try in Gary's indoor range.

I got to take 4 shots. WOW! Hit the paper with 3 shots at 25 yds. The big bang sure got the attention of the onlookers, and brought a temporary silence to the rest of the shooting lanes. :what:

Cool gun. Guess I can't really think of a reason I need one, but I love the way that a .38 special round drops into and hides inside a spent .500 case.

NailGun.

I think they're more or less worthless. Way too big to carry around for bear defense. If you need something more powerful than a .454 Casull, get a rifle.

RE: More or less worthless

Don't be jealous.

I feel sorry for you if you only buy the guns that you need.

Agree With Geister

The .460 and .500 Magnums are vanity calibers. As Geister said, after .454 Casull, get a freaking rifle. Enough already, S&W.

"Worthless"? "Vanity Calibers"? Get a clue fellas. There are some of us that can very competently handle high powered rounds like the S&W 500. I for one live smack dab in the middle of grizzly country. I also spend most of my day alone in the woods. Carrying a rifle while getting my work done is NOT an option and would be very impracticle. However a 4 inch .500 in a holster is an option and it is ALWAYS "at my side". I retired my .454 about a week after I got my .500 and I have never looked back. It is very close to being a one hand 45-70 and its the best balance of power, portability and size for my very real needs while in the field! Thank you Smith & Wesson

I agree. I also have a 4" 500. I don't need it, but I love to shoot large bore weapons.

I think that it is absurd that some people think they are worthless just because they can't handle/afford them.

I shot one a while back. The local guns r' us only had the Hornady 500 grain max loads, so needless to say the recoil was "interesting".

I've been buying my FIL some 250 grain Corbon "light target loads" in 500 SW Special. I'm anxious to see how they compare.

I've been strangely drawn to the .500 magnum of late as well. I'm a big-bore fanatic, and there's just something very alluring about having a .50 caliber handgun. I don't have any big bruins near me (other than the NHL players of the same name), but the .500 would be nice medicine for those marauding gray squirrels around my property. I'm not sure the attraction is one of vanity, as I really don't care what people think of my desire for one, nor how I will look with it (I'm sexy enough as it is).

I like the fact that there always seem to be a few "lightly used" .500's in the display case at my favorite gunmonger's establishment. You know the ones - only 3 burn rings around the cylinder face, and a box of 17 rounds of ammunition...

Am I post count racist?
I look at the off hand comments and see 6 posts and 16 posts.... and think well there just not use to having polite conversation on fire arms.....

And then I dismiss everything they say in the thread.

jcs271, I too live in the wilds of the intermountain west and though I do not own a .500 I certainly see where they can be very useful.

RTFM

Possibly. Or ...

Apparently you answered your own question. Or it's just possible that you found this forum before others did, or it's possible that you're a post babbler, or it's possible you've more spare time on your hands than others. But if you're questioning yourself, heck I'll be a bud and just confirm it for you.

It is interesting that you associate the number of posts with politeness. I wouldn't have come up with that one on my own.

Absurdity and the like ...

JAMES77257: I think that it is absurd that some people think they are worthless just because they can't handle/afford them.

I think that it is absurd that you have decided that shooters who find the .460 and .500 on the vanity side do so because they can't handle/afford them. A tad on the presumptuous side. Or you've hacked into my bank accounts to analyze my financial status and seen my ability to discharge firearms. I mean, that could all be true, right? In that case, you've make an insightful remark.

But in the real world, I can certainly afford one. In each caliber. In several barrel lengths. Even the survival kit version where I get a signal mirror, matches. whistle and a decoder ring. (The single most amusing gun marketing tactic in history. I cannot stop laughing.). I haven't shot one, but I'm thinking I can probably "handle" one. Do they recoil heavier than the M102 I fired in Vietnam?

It's called "piece of Mind" not vanity.......
I too live ing big game country and there is nothing else I'd rather carry than mine. Just wait until you shoot one loaded with a 700 gr bullet coming out at 1200 ft. per second. I love it and love to shoot it.

Vanity catridge, yes.

I did not even imply that you can't "very competently handle high powered rounds." My comments, if you read them, say it's a vantiy cartridge. Dang, why so defensive?

You're saying then that your retired .454 was not up to the task of bumping a bruin? Hmmm. I think there are a couple of us that managed to do that long before S&W's latest desperate attempt to regain some market share.

As for using a big bad .500 Mag handgun to curb those ever-threatening grizzlies, I remember being told that killing bears was something a three-year-old could do. If you're old enough, surely you recall the Davy Crockett TV show? Fess Parker, coonskin hat? Well, right there in the theme song lyrics it talks about killing bears:

"Raised in the woods so he knew ev'ry tree
Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three
Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier!"

So what's the big deal again?

Nothing wrong with a vanity cartridge - it'd look nice next to my .416 Rigby.

Either would be a bit over the top for armadillo, but "fun" is as good an excuse as any to get a new firearm.

I did shoot a .500SW not too long ago - seemed considerably more gentle than a .44 SBH. I'm not sure if it's the muzzle brake, the weight or the grip. Possibly all three - the single action grip shape doesn't work well for me past .357Mag. I didn't feel compelled to take it home - maybe someday. It'll likely come well ahead of the .50AE DE which I didn't much care for.

If I was going to buy one I think it would be a .460, not a .500. From what I read the .460 has higher muzzle velocities and you have the ability to fire not only the .460 Magnum rounds but the .45 LC and .454 Casull rounds too.

I had some experience with this model a couple of months back. A young Marine sold it to my brother. The Marine had stitches on the top of his head where the gun recoiled almost out of his hand and hit him on top of his noggin'. I had trouble believing it but it's true. The guy must have held it in one hand like a Ruger Mark IV :uhoh: . Anyway, I shot a cylinder of the .50 cals. and with a good firm grip (both hands) it was not so bad. I did feel the vibrations in the bottoms of my feet and the echo seemed to go one for minutes. It's not a gun I would want to have to shoot in a quick response to some kind of attack, without hearing protection.

It can be argued that there is no need for a 454 either. If you need that much power, then get a rifle right? And how practical is a 44 mag?

Where did I single you out? If my comments apply to you, maybe keep it to yourself next time.

I have fired numerous different large calibers including the .577. But they are rifles. Handguns are totally different. You could be the baddest SOB in the land, and lack the upper body strength to handle the full powered 700 gr. rounds out of the 4" 500.

We all have different intrests, and just because you don't agree with someone else's choice does not make them wrong.

ETA: +1 on troll.

Yes. With these other calibers, cartridges.454, 44, 50AE. Is their really a need for them? Me, I would think that would be up to the user. What they need it for for. Choices, that’s what it is.
Look at the 44. Back in the 50’s, when it came out, it went, probably through the same criticism, as what the 460,500 is going through today? Even among the gun community.

The 44 being used specifically for hunting? Where the 38, 357, 9mm, 45 were common in those days. It took over a decade (almost 20 years) for the 44, to become a household name, per say, and not just the revolver (model 29) Eastwood used in the Dirty Harry movies, either. It became known even among the non-gun users. There are users out their, that carry it for CH use in todays world. What has changed since than? In reference, to home defense, CHL, CCW use?
While there are a lot of choices for CHL, CCW, home defense use, even hunting I find it irrelevant if one uses a 9mm or a 500. Other than conceal issues. And for type of game. As far as, over-penetration is a concern, how powerful it is. It goes hand in hand. If one was in that scenario, one would have to be concerned more about the background, what’s behind that object, ones’ shooting at? What’s’ right, more than being a legal issue that one can get into, after the fact.
Now, if you put a gun to my head. And had to pick a 9mm or 454, 460, 500, which someone was going to fire, not only would I rather be that person behind that object, if that was the case. I would pick the 9mm. At the same time, it’s giving me a choice. Death by poison or death by hanging
I was in court one day, where the judge made a statement (pulling it out of context) that “a 22, can travel up to a mile”. Being wise (not being that person, its being told to), and not asking him to elaborate on it. What scenario, he was referring to? My take on it was, no other forces, obstacles acting on it? Or, maybe, a.22, 9mm, 460,500 have one thing in common? Just a guess!
I can now understand why the 22 is not popular for CH, CCW use, too powerful. Can travel up to a mile. More powerful?…excuse me, travels further?, than the 460, and 500 magnums!
The whole point, which is best for defense? Hunting for that matter! My reasoning, behind buying a 500, not as dangerous, as thee “.22……. can travel a mile” wisdom.
So the, “too powerful” garbage, does not hold up … to that judge anyway.
It’s like saying:

Two guys in separate, cars, its 0300 hours (that’s 3 A.M.), road/weather conditions are “clear”, by the way there is a City Ordnance that: “anyone under the age 18 is not allowed out (by himself) after 2300 hours (1 hour before midnight)” one in a

Traveling at 40 MPH (legal speed limit 45)

A Corvette,

thumbnail.aspx

Traveling at 65 MPH (speed limit was 65 MPH),

Both could not break fast enough to stop

And both hit and kill a pedestrian, in a cross walk. One pedestrian happens to be 17 and one 16. Pedestrians had the right-of-way (green-light)? No witnesses.

Which guy would/should get a lighter sentence? Or off the hook, for that matter?
One does not have to be in law enforcement or the legal profession to understand:

Even if the vehicles’ operator said: “I had a green light”. It does not excuse the fact that one has to look while driving. If there is a pedestrian, in a crosswalk, to STOP! No matter what vehicle you’re in! No matter what speed you’re going at! Whether or not (for the vehicle operator), had the right-of-way!
If that was the case, to get off the hook, I could have done that to my ex-wife, when I had the opportunity.
So, go and get a 460/500 or whatever floats your buoy.
Also, if, anyone, no matter if it’s a long-gun, shotgun, hand-gun, and whatever caliber it be. And, one worries (them-selves to death) about legal ratifications’. Don’t buy a firearm. Except for hunting. And then, do not use it for defense purposes. And do what your state tells you what you have to do. That might be, you have to run away, “retreat”. Any lawyer will tell you that.
I’m glad; I live in a state (Texas), which understands 2A rights and use of “deadly force”.

Because I Can

I would love to have one, if for no other reason than to be able to experiment with various offerings in ammunition and owning one giant powerful handgun. I have no practical need for one, but that should not regulate their existence, nor my ability to buy one. If S&W produced this weapon specifically for killing grizzly bears, it would be a short sale. Most buyers are likely those who will never confront a grizzly, (like myself, unless they repopulate Massachusetts).

I also bought a Marlin Guide Gun in .450 Marlin. Why? I don't hunt anymore, so what could I possibly use it for? Cartridges are 35-bucks a box, so what possible purpose would I have for an 18" .450 Marlin with 50,000 pounds of CUP???? Well, because I wanted it. The third time I tore the skin off my knuckles firing this rifle, I'd decided enough was enough. My big gorilla mitts weren't designed for that small lever. It was however, fun while it lasted. The .450 Marlin does a number on bowling pins and pumpkins... Maybe one day they'll make one with a larger lever and I'll buy another.

However, I cannot and will not regulate my gun purchases based on what some may deem to be "too much gun"....That's just no fun... :neener:

Smith and Wesson 500 - Here I come!.... :D
