Worst I've ever done. I couldn't hit ANYTHING on the long rifle steel stages. Did okay with shotgun and handgun. Maybe I should actually sight in my rifles and stop shooting a different one each match? :uhoh::banghead:

Oh, well... still had fun. :)

And I still won the "heavy" division... only 2 other guys shot it and one DNFed.

.
Hahaha... oermlautz. hee.

Hey! Congrats. I chuckled too at what Normandy wrote:

"Hey, you put one in the W column. They aren't all pretty."

I know a guy that shoots USPSA with a 5.5 inch Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum and 240 Power Factor Ammo. It SMACKS the poppers down :). It is fun for both the shooter and the spectator to shoot/see something different for a change.

I would love to have been at your match just to hear the Garand PING!

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

i havent done any 2 or 3 gun competitions, so im curious, what is heavy metal division?
.308 or larger rifle (20 round max), .44 or larger handgun (10-round max), 12 gauge pump shotgun (9 round max). Heavy Metal Irons (what I shoot) doesn't allow magnified scopes on your rifle. Heavy Metal Optics does.

poodleshooters generally shoot .223 rifles (AR-15 variants, generally), 9mm or .40 handguns, and 12 gauge semi-autos. 20 gauges also allowed.

Actually this year 3-gun nation affiliated clubs are changing up the Heavy classes (I think because last year's changes were stupid and pissed people off). Last year you could shoot heavy optics and use a 9mm pistol and semi-auto shotgun. So it was basically the standard tactical division but with a man's rifle. This year they have Heavy Sport and Heavy Optics, but they score them as one division... which is a little weird. Heavy Sport doesn't allow magnified optics, but you get to use greater-than-10 round mags for your handgun (like a Glock 41 or Para Ordnance P14-45, which I may start using) and you can have an extended mag tube on your PUMP 12-gauge that allows greater than 8 rounds in the tube (though you still have to start the stage with no more than 9 in the gun total). The Optics division has a 10-round max handgun capacity, and your (semi-auto allowed) 12-gauge shotgun MAY NOT carry more than 8 rounds in the tube. But you can mount a scope on the rifle.

so... you pays yer nickel and you takes yer choice. I imagine not many will choose heavy sport. hitting steel at 400 yards is not easy with open sights after running around a bit.

We had a guy show up once for fun to shoot "WWII" division. He had a M1 carbine, a '97 trenchgun and a Browning high power. I wish I had been in his squad to watch.

I'd like to give this a try... but my Wingmaster only holds five in the tube with it's Wilson Combat 1-rd extension. I don't want a longer mag extension on it. If I learn to quad-load! mebbe I'd stand a chance. LOL.

How big is the plate at 400 yds? I'd try using my .308 Ruger Scout and factory ghost ring. I have a .45ACP Springfield that shoots well, too.

Hahaha! Hey, I can dream, right?

:)

longest required steel was at 300 yards (~275ish lasered) and the 400 yarder was a bonus that cut 30 seconds off your time if you hit it. I'm guessing 18 inches-2 feet "flasher" targets. You could go prone if desired. Most guys braced on a wooden barrier. ~3 guys in my squad hit the bonus but all had magnified optics. Actually 2 didn't hit it but the SO called hits so they counted.

Generally 1-2 hits are required on long steel with a 10-second penalty for a miss. If you shoot at it once (or the required number of hits) you can move on and take the penalty. If you don't shoot at a target at all you get the miss plus a Failure To Engage (FTE) penalty that adds a few seconds also.

I had 100 seconds of misses/penalties on one stage. LOL

3-gun nation paper targets are square with an 8-inch perforated center circle. most divisions (other than heavy) require 1 hit to the center circle OR 2 hits anywhere on the paper to neutralize the target. so most people double tap every paper target because it's nearly as fast as shooting once and helps guarantee that you neutralize that target. If you hit only once, and outside the central circle, you get a Failure To Neutralize penalty of 2.5 seconds I think.

Heavy division gets a scoring concession that means you only have to hit the paper anywhere once to neutralize.

Nobody will complain if you try it. You'll just be nice and slow. Depending on your club you may run into the "par" time on certain stages, and they'll just stop you when you hit the max time for the stage and you'll just take the penalty. This helps keep matches running when people miss a lot or are REEEEEALLY slow.

Shotgun reloading is where almost everyone adds a lot of time. If I ever get my video up you can see how long I take. It feels like an eternity when watching it.

You can get a sidesaddle, butt cuff, arm cuff, bandolier, and/or shooting pouch/bag and just load shotgun from that. It's about having fun, not being fast.
For example, the match winner's time was 242 seconds. My time as noted above was 666 seconds. That means that over 8 stages I took an average of 53 seconds longer to shoot each stage than he did. LOLOL Almost a frickin' MINUTE longer times 8 stages. :D

I've shot with plenty of guys shooting 28" duck guns and 4-round mag tubes. My mossberg holds 9 in the gun and 12 ON the gun (sidesaddle and butt cuff) and I run a bandolier when I need more than that (rarely at our club). I'm not fast. I've tried to learn to load 4 at a time using shell caddies but I suck at it.

And if you decide to run a bolt-action rifle you'll be extra-super-slow. But you'll be the coolest guy there. :)

sounds like interesting competitions, wonder if theres anything like that near me to try out once i get back into .308 rifles, do they have a version of it for 2-gun competitions? i have no desire to compete with shotguns and prefer to practice with what i may actually find myself carrying, a rifle and a handgun

Call your local ranged, LGS, etc.
They should know about any competitions in your area.

666 MARK OF THE BEAST!!!

You can always repent my son, in fact you can start by sending me that un-holy garand as a small tithing.

I'll put in a good word with Benny Hinn, though he may require a meager and charitable tithing too.
