This is obviously my first post but i already read basically every post onhere but my question is..

Iv never purchased a shotgun my self and i was wondering what the process is if i were to say go to dick's and buy one. Last i kenw u only need to be 18+ to purchase a shotgun. correct me if in wrong but i dont think u need a hunting liscense or anything.

So hows the process go...do you go pay for it and have a 3-5 day waiting period whiel they do a backround check or can u walk in buy it and leave with it right on the spot?..

Also in live in syracuse ny

Thanks

I don't know if it is different in Ny but when I bout my Remington 870 3 weeks ago at Dick's I went in, filled out the 4473 and after they made the call and got the ok I paid and left. No waiing for a few days. It might be different in NY but...like I said I don't know.

a 4473 is the "yellow form" it used to be yellow but is now white and it asks for all your information:

Full name
Date of Birth
Social security number
Address
If you've ever been convicted of a felony

all that good stuff. You fill it out and then the sales peron calls a number and gives them the information and they are told whether you are allowed to buy the gun or not.

here is a link to an online sample of the 4473

I'm sure someone else here can be more detailed if you need. Though I think that is the basics of it.

A 4473 is the yellow federal form all gun dealers have you fill out when you buy a firearm.

It has stuff on it like your name, address, social-security number, and some questions:

- Are you addicted to illegal drugs? Yes/No
- Are you an illegal alien? Yes/No
- Are you a felon? Yes/No

The biggest thing is that you have to spell everything out. No abbreviations. No St. for "Street". You also have to write Yes or No in the boxes, not just checkmarks. Just be honest, tell the clerk you've never filled one out, and you know the form is real picky, and to double-check what you put on it.

They will call the FBI/NCIS call center with your name birthdate and social security. If you're clean, they might give you the go-ahead within a few minutes. If there's a felon out there in the 300 million Americans with the same or close name as you and a similar birthdate, they might take a few days to cross-reference your Social Security #, and the store will call you back when they get the go-ahead.

Don't freak out about the form. That stuff stays on the form, the form would only get looked at if your shotgun turns up in a crime scene and the police/ATF trace the serial number, otherwise it'll go into a file and get forgotten.

When you're young and buying your first firearm, relax, don't freak out, and just fill out all the paperwork the salesman gives you. You're 18 and presumably legal to have a shotgun for whatever you want. You're old enough to vote and die in a war, so you can damn well own a firearm too! So don't be all nervous like it's your trying to buy booze on a fake ID or your first time in a porn shop. :D

I don't know what the particulars in New York are, but the store will know.

Also, you can go to www.packing.org and they will have a rundown on each state's laws.

Since you are unfamiliar with the form, I would suggest that you read every question before you answer. Most answers are Yes or No except for the personal inforamtion. Make sure you have ID along. You might even take a second form of ID if you have one just in case. I have heard of stores asking for two forms of ID like the post office. Don't believe it is required though from a dealer standpoint. Don't go with all your buds. Sometimes dealers get nervous about straw purchases when there are a lot of people around.

Make sure your drivers license address matches the address on the form. You don't need your social security card. It is a crime to lie and you sign it at the bottom of the form. But if you are like most of us, you fill the form out accurately, they run the check, and you walk out with the shotgun. There is usually a fee (like $10) for the NICs check at least in my state and they fingerprint you too (here anyway). I feel like holding my breath every time they make that NICs call even though I have nothing to hide.

Whole process is very fast. Walmart sometimes drags it out though. Don't worry about it. It is just something you get used to if you purchase firearms. Enjoy!

Just ask what you need to do at the store where you want to buy the gun. You will definitely need a driver's license (or some sort of ID), and be sure to read the questions carefully. No big deal (although I'm not sure if the questions have ever stopped a crime).

The waiting periods, etc. vary by state, but you do have to fill out a 4473 form in every state. The store calls in to a Federal database to make sure that you are not a felon who cannot buy guns.

Welcome to the wonderful world of RKBA! Be sure to join the NRA too!

not 18 im actuaslly 19 lol...yea there shouldnt be many out there with the same name as me...theres only like 45 people in united states registered in the phone records with the same last name as me

I suggest that you find a local gunstore and inquire as to the process. From what I remember, NY counties frequently have their own gun laws, and you need a state license that's issued by the county you live in. Still, shotguns tend to be regulated less than pistols.

I was under the impression you dont need a state liscense for firearms to buy a shotgun, on the nys firearms site i believe it said you dont need any type of permit or liscense to buy a shotgun or rifle. UNless by liscense you meant drivers liscense?

You're fine in Syracuse for any long gun purchase. Go to Dick's, pick out gun (Remington 870), ask for help with 4473 form (tell them it's your first), pass the NICs check.

Ask Dave McCracken any question about shotgunning- He'll have the answer.

Don't forget-

Buy ammo, use up, buy more ammo................:D

yea i should pass since i have absoloutly nothing on my record...no tickets or anything...nto saying i havent done anything illegal just never got caught;)

You might want to work on your spelling and punctuation, too, if you want that form to pass.

lol i dont plan on putting that iv done illegal things but never been caught on the form. as for puncuation..who cares when im typing on a forum?..i dont do spell check here and have a million typos

Actually, many of us care. There's enough incomprehensible drivel in the world, we don't need more. It makes it easier for other folks to read and understand your posts when they are somewhat concise. You don't need to have perfect spelling or punctuation.

Not caring about how you communicate is an ignorant way to go through life. For developing and maintaining life-long written and oral communication skills, mastering what you commit to paper a good habit to adopt. Your current and future employers, spouse, children, and friends will all appreciate it. At some point, it might make a difference that you actually care about.

Give the guy a break!:D I remember the first handgun I tried to buy. I was over 21 and it was the first time I bought a firearm that wasnt a private sale. Ive been through alot of crap in my short life and I was still all worked up about it. Close to 10 years ago I had gotten arrested on a FELONY :cuss: warrant charge. It was a big big misunderstanding(a whole other story!) and the charges were dropped but my prints were now on file at the FBI along with an arrest record. So I was basiclly scared! lol I wondered what if the courts never filed the findings or something? Was the store clerk gonna scald me and announce over the intercom that I was a bad person while kicking me out the door? Of course not but I had so much crap running through my head. I wanted this pistol so bad and it had been on order for 2 months! ARRRGGHHHH! So I fill out the form and I get delayed ! The next three days are total hell. Was it talking this long becuase they found all this stuff about me(I didnt do anything I dont remember did I ? lol of course not) or was it taking this long becuase its goverment agencies (of course) ? So after 3 sleepless nights I get the call that I was approved! The next two purchases of course I got delays and although I knew I was ok I still was a little worked up! lol Now after countess purchases I just expect a 3 day delay(never sooner but sometime they never call back) and dont even worry about it! :) So you have it good! Its really nothing to worry about though! Like tohers have said just let the clerk know your a vigin! hehe!
