Shotgun vs. Carbine for home defense - I get it now!

I've even killed a 200 lb hog with one and several smaller ones, and that from a 4" revolver! I shot 'em in the trap, of course, close enough for proper shot placement.
I didn't do it, but I know of a lady that killed a bull (that got in the garden one too many times :uhoh:) with one shot from a .22LR. She seemed to think the .22 was good nuff' (and that is all that she ever had). I have the lucky rifle, but no intentions to try and replicate the shot.

:)

A .22 rimfire doesn't even consistently put down a jackrabbit. My .223 blows them up.

I've had the exact opposite experience. The .22 downs them with one properly placed shot. I've never seen anything blown up from my .223.

I personally prefer my AR15 since its what I trained with and used in the Army and continue to train with.

Though I certainly wouldnt feel bad off with a good pump gun. But those things kick a lot! I like fast follow up shots.

My house is set up that there is no easy or quiet way to break in. Plus my three dogs are going to warn me prior to someone throwing a brick through my arcadia door.

As for the .22. I was a proponent against them until I became a cop. Ive seen a few people shot with that round and it is a lot more deadly than most give it credit. I was first on scene when a person commited suicide with a .22 handgun. One shot DRT.

Ive seen enough shootings to know that any handgun, even the might .45, has to hit something vital to stop someone quickly. Truthfuly even then it doesnt always work. The human body is so fragile and so resilient its mind boogling.

I like your thinking.
I would add, however, that the shotgun has less chance of overpenetration than a carbine.
Less chance of a stray bullet killing your neighbor. (I know you guys never miss...but I'm just sayin'.)

Not really, 00 buck and slugs penetrate more walls than a .223 HP will.

And the .223 also tends to have more controlled penetration than any advisable shotgun ammunition.

80% of firearms used in actual successful self-defense cases are handguns.

Thats doesnt mean they are a better choice for HD, that just means they are used more often and theres miriad reasons that is the case

Maverick22, no professional self defense instructor in America would recommend the .22 rimfire for self defense purposes. It CAN kill someone. However, it can not be DEPENDED on to kill quickly or reliably. I feel sorry for you if you believe otherwise.

I once found a $20 bill on the way to work and bought my buddies breakfast. It can happen. But, you can't count on it happening every day.

I don't go around killing people every day, myself. But, a .22 rifle is a dangerous thing to be on the muzzle end of. I don't know of a man that could take the firepower a 10/22 offers and survive center mass hits. No, I don't keep one loaded for that. I hunt small game with .22s and enjoy them at the range and out at my place just plinking. I consider the .22 rifle one of the most useful of weapons for fun in the field. I grew up with 'em as I lived in a creek bottom full of squirrel.

OTOH, I don't get all worked up over someone suggesting that the .22 might be a formidable weapon for home defense. I know I could use it. I know my skills with the weapon, honed over 50 years, and I know how to shoot one rapidly and accurately. i think i'd actually PREFER a .22 rifle to a Ruger LCP, much more accurate, easier hits, faster follow ups, you can practically write your name on the guy's chest with it at machine gun firing rates at short range.

So, it's not a subject to be name calling over IMHO. Your opinion of the .22 may differ. If you hate 'em so much, just don't ever buy one. You won't know what you're missing. Of course, I grew up with a .22 in my hand so I'm a little biased, I guess. I have far more fun with one than any center fire when I'm in the field. And, east Texas squirrel season is next month. I'm kinda thinkin' about getting back to my roots. :D

Anyway, back to the shotguns or carbines thing, I do prefer the shotgun with 3 buck for MY needs. I also grew up with a shotgun as I love waterfowl hunting and have since the age of 14. I'm as familiar with my shotguns as my .22s, and you can mess up a guy's chest with it with just one pull of the trigger. :D
