I'm looking for a cheap shotgun to blast some paper with, maybe take birding and to keep around the house. However I'm broke. I also really like single shot break action auto ejectors so I've got some options.

Obviously for $200 I'm not getting anything nice, or even reliable probably a New England Firearms or a Stoeger but what would you guys recommend?

Here are some I'm looking at

H&R/NEF Pardner

H&R/NEF Tamer

Stoeger with a rib and exposed hammer, looks nicer but for the price the features may cause quality reduction else ware

And of course the 10 gauge just because those geese have it coming

Feel free to make any other recommendations. Obviously I'm not looking for the highest level of reliability or quality

If you aren't opposed to used, there are plenty of bargains to be had out there.

I regularly see H&R singles for between $50 and $80.

Last weekend, there was a used Mossberg 500 for $119 at a local shop.

My last Wingmaster was only $159. It is a bit cosmetically challenged, but shoots well.

Just take your time and look through some used racks at local gunshops and you will be able to find a good solid shotgun for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

The used market up here sucks because of the paperwork involved in transferring guns.

Heck it sucks buying new guns! In city with a population of a million (well some suburbs in there too) we only have a handful of gun shops, I think there are actually about 6 but I'd only say 3 or 4 are "real" gun shops but they don't take consignments of marginal value (paperwork and storage requirements)

NEF Pardner pump, utterly reliable, handles all the functions you described well, great deal for the price. Had mine for awhile now, completely trust it for HD.

The Maverick by Mossberg shotguns aren't bad. I picked up one with an 18" barrel for $160 including state sales tax, new in the box. They make a longer barreled version for about the same price. I've had no problems at all with mine. I actually prefer them to the newer 870s, but they don't compare at all to the older ones.

I don't really want a pump gun even under $200 I'd rather save up for a nice OA for my next shotgun or maybe a Benelli

NEF for the price if your shoulder can stand the pounding of a lightweight single shot! Right now Dick's Sporting Goods has the 870 Express in 12 or 20ga for $219 after rebate! Pretty cheap!

OH! forgot to mention...The Winchester 1300 is a great pump shotgun that was discontinued in 2006. A few new ones are still out there at bargain prices. Parts will be around for years to come. Best deal out there if you find one. My personal preference to an 870.

We aren't lucky enough to have Dick's Sporting Goods stores up here :(

I can take the light weight single shot, hell I'm considering the 10ga so I can load some 1.5oz rounds. I'm built like a brick shh... something ;)

Ok, I have to ask, where the heck are you? (don't ned specifics...just curious.)

I have to agree about H&R single shots. They are great for the price. I have a 1946 H&R Topper M48 that locks up tight as a bank vault, and is so smooth it's just awesome.

The other thing you might want to look at is Remington's Spartan line.

Check each one out. but I'd still go for H&R because they are comparable in price and quality to the Spartan line, but they are made in the USA.

Another +1 for H&R here. I have had one since 1984 without a single problem. My 10 year old shoots it now and kind of expected some dents and dings but heck even the wood seems tough on them. Not my first choice in a shotgun but it is up there on the list if only for reliablity.

Canada. Sad part is I was thinking it sounded like Massachusetts so we're not too much better in some places. Too bad things are difficult, I know of a couple of stores that have racks of quality used shotguns for under $200, my last Ithaca 37 was $100.

BLARG! And the next big trip to the US is to Hawaii and it's in Feb so I won't even be able to stock up then and send them back! (via an exporting FFL of course) of course by then Obama could be in office or McCain that leftist RiNO even so prices will go up because people will be stocking up for the AWB or just bad management... aaahhh adventures in freedom.

I have the NEF Pardner 12. It was my hunting shotgun during college. I didn't have much money and bought it LNIB for $70.

I killed a dump truck load of birds with that gun. To this day, I shoot it better than I do any other shotgun, even my Browning Citori. It's light as heck, so it's easy to carry, dead nuts reliable, points and swings ridiculously well, and in all honesty, is my favorite shotgun to this day.

If you're the kind of guy who can appreciate something for what it is, and realize that some times you just don't need all the bells and whistles, then the NEF will be in your collection for the rest of your life.

I've had a NEF single shot 20 gauge for about 8-10 years now and its never misfired to this day, been a great gun!

+1 on the mossberg maverick. I picked one up last fall and LOVE IT! I think I just passed the 1000 round mark and it has been 100% reliable! Is it as smooth and well made as my Ithaca DS...NO. Is it a tough, inexpensive shotgun...YES!
