I had just finished weed whacking my front yard, went around the back to trim up around the back when i heard the all too familiar crack of gunshots.
Now i live in a fairly quiet little neighborhood, lots of kids playing, riding bikes, families on front porches. My stepdaughter was playing in the backyard. This is NOT a common sound around these parts. This guy was less than 25 yards from my front porch....firing a blued revolver in the middle of the street.

Needless to say, I dropped the weed whacker, and hollered for my s. daughter to get into the house and into the safe room (part of the basement). I followed her through the sliding door and was met by my wife who handed me my cell phone with 911 already on the line. She had already gotten my 4 month old down the basement as well, armed herself with a sidearm.
my hand was still resting on the p-32 in my pocket, I don't know exactly when my fingers found it...sometime between the time the first shot rang out and making it into the house.
I gave a discription of the shooter to the 911 operator who then placed me on hold...????????? huh?!!!
By this point I could see the guy running down the middle of the street (slowly, as his pants were darn near around his knees) and started asking the neighbors what the he!! just happened. 911 let me know that the police were on their way.

Noone was injured thank god, and the police were there within 5 minutes.
It was UNREAL how fast the whole thing unfolded, and how fast it was over.

If it had happened just 1 minute earlier, I would have been RIGHT THERE weed whacker and all. At that point i don't know what I would have done...probably soiled myself.

I'm glad to know that my first instinct was not to play hero, but to get my family to a safe location...

I'm glad to know that my step daughter listened and did not hesitate when I shouted for her to get to the safe room (she just turned 6 last month).

I'm glad to know that my wife can think and act well "under fire" so to speak.

It was to say the least quite unnerving, and I will be sleeping with my bushy m-4gery next to me instead of in the safe tonight, as well as a sidearm in the nightstand lockbox.

Tomorrow we will talk to the realtor as well....I'm gonna take the heck outta dodge as soon as possible. crime is on the upswing, and I want no part of it for my family (breakins have been happening alot as of late around here as well).

I suppose theres no real moral or great lesson here, and if this doesn't fit in the S&T forum, please feel free to lock or delete.

I suppose if there is a lesson to be learned here, it's to have a plan for the family....teach the little ones to listen and act without question, and to put the safety of your family first above trying to play hero.

Any comments are more than welcome, as are similar experiences.
thanks for reading.

ps...anyone wanna buy a house??

Congratulations on a situation well handled! You and your family made wise decisions under dire circumstances... you should be commended.

Are you kidding? That IS being a hero!

You done good. Bad things happen in even the best neighborhoods. You clearly worked out "what if..." in advance and acted in a purposeful manner.

First of all, good job keeping your family safe and not having any Rambo urges...

Did you ever figure out what the moron was shooting at?

Apparently, from what some of the other neighbors saw and heard (all I could hear until the shots were fired was the weedwhacker), this guy had gotten into a verbal dispute with another guy on a bicycle over some money owed. Looks like theres some bad apples in the neighborhood, probably just trying to look tough or scare the other guy. But bullets are bullets, and that was a little too close to home for comfort.

Thanks for the kind words, that is definately NOT what I expected to happen on a lazy monday afternoon.
Just glad noone was hurt....Now if they would only just catch the idiot.

Playing hero and getting shot or arrested is far less beneficial to all parties than getting everyone to a safe place in such a bizarre circumstance.

Sounds like it's time to move, as well as possibly looking into carrying a piece you think you could hit some freak in the middle of the street with while the moving/buying/selling process takes place.

And, maybe you should keep that weed whacker--it worked fast enough to potentially keep you out of harms way.

My guess is that nothing will help. You are better off spending your money in hardening your home, beefing up your food supply, water supply (filters, storage etc) and weaponry. With the price of oil this high, with the police and other city, county, state and federal offices feeling the squeeze of inflation on commodities and the pinch of the fuel prices (they have budgets and many have spent the whole nut already) patrols will become less. I think that entitlement programs will be slimmed and skimmed if not outright cut and crime (theft and what not) will go up.

I don't think it matters where you live. I think things are going to get more difficult.

I disagree with the last two posts. If you live in an area where the government is in free fall failure (say Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, NOLA or similar) moving would be a splendid idea. But I would make sure to stay involved with my government where I moved to so that such things did not happen again.

I realize that with the economy the way it is, that crime is on the rise all over the country. My thinking is that should things REALLY tank, then I would much rather have an acre in the country, than a coffin sized lot in the city.
Aside from welding bars over the windows, I don't know how much more secure could make the house. I've spent the money on good locks, additional locking devices on windows and doors, an alarm system. The yard is fenced in, and yard lighting is quite good.
The problem is, bullets don't seem to discriminate against the hardened or easy target house.
Over the past 2 or 3 years I've made an effort to stock food, water, weaponry, ammunition, disaster/camping/emergency supplies.
With a little more property, I could easily plant a garden for food....and most importantly, GET A DOG...my house is just too darn small right now.
I guess the best we can do is to be extra aware, and hope for the best.

I currently live in Flint, MI.
not one of the best places to be......

"...and most importantly, GET A DOG...my house is just too darn small right now."

BTW Dogs don't care how big your house is. I have a Pitbull Mix and a MinPin Mix and I live in a 2 bedroom condo. As long as they ge their morning and evening walks they are 100% good to go.

On days when we stay home all day all they do is lay on the floor or on the couch (if they are invited to sit there with us)

They are so good at their duties the UPS guy is always trying leave stuff at the door without a signature.

Got "Bad Apples"?

You did great!

Thanks for sharing your real-world experience. Too often gun-owners get caught up in unlikely "what-ifs" and "what they would do".

Your experience is how it really goes down when it does - quick, violent, unplanned for, and with zero predictability (middle of the day instead of middle of the night).

Great job on protecting your family.

Good Job at keeping the Family Safe!

I say you and yours have a great plan of action set-up.

Dittos to what Titan6 said.

Flint, MI?!

Yes sir, it's time to get gone with the governor et al up there. I'm not sure what your real estate market is like, but if you can sell soon. I'd recommend Wyoming, Colorada, or Montana-but depends on what you do for a living. If it's auto-manufacturing, I'd check out Toyota or Honda in Tennesee or Kentucky. Those states seem to be more gun-friendly and do have lower crime rates (for the most part).

What area of Flint are you in? That's my hometown, my old neighborhood is off of Atherton, close to Dort. Most of my family still lives there. Unfortunately all of Michigan's government is corrupt, not just Flint's :(

You're not too far from me...Flint. I did my student teaching in Saginaw and Flint. Interesting to say the least. I was in Lowell Middle School, which no longer exists.

Anyhow, kudos! You did right, and did it well!

Continue to be safe. Just wondering, have you considered a bigger and more powerful firearm? For lawnwork, I prefer my Glock 19C. It's small enough to hide well, but big enough that had those shots been "in-coming", you would have more than prayers to back you up.

PM me some day when you want to meet up at Williams in Davison, for the firearms range. It's abouy 20 minutes away for me. My treat.

Everybody needs a plan- my son lives at home, has a carry license and is very proficient- my 18 year old daughter knows where all the revolvers are located (one in every room in the house) and understands the defense strategy - pull the trigger untill the revolver stops making noise. We practice for the day something bad happens.

vplthrneck...my wife is from virginia, however, all of our family is here in the great lakes state. with a brand new baby, our parents would kill us if we took their grandbaby that far away.
neviander...we live off atherton near the truck and bus plant...small world eh?!?!
doc2005...believe me, i will be carrying my standard size carry piece from now on while working in the yard. however from the looks of it, the shooter would have been lucky to hit the treetops from the way he was firing.
tell ya what, i'll accept your williams invite..... provided that you let ME buy lunch.

thank you all for the kind words regarding what happened. that makes me feel better knowing that i didn't do anything terribly wrong.
