shotshell-belt for HD

My on-gun load has very recently changed thinking about where I live now vs. the way I've always done it. That is for the first time ever my riotgun has only buckshot onboard (federal 9 ball "OO" it patterns well FWIW)

BTW...unrelated but -if you get a gun that refuses to pattern well w/ any 9 ball "00" load try remington express 12 ball "00" for some reason that always seems to work in guns that hate 9 ball!) It's a 2 3/4" mag load though...it's stout but managable...I digress...

It's got the POD carrier on the adjustable stock (knoxx spec ops recoil reducing adjustable stock...buying their pod seems the only good way to go with that setup) so anyway 6 in the gun 5 on the butt...I used to always have two rounds of slugs on the buttstock in a spandex shell holder "buck-up...slug down" you could see the slugs staring at yah...alternated pattern pushed so the leading edge of shell was even with the elastic so you can easily get a good grip on any kind of round you need top or bottom (p=down b=up) "pbpbp" for a rough visual refference...see how the tails are spaced? Anyway it always worked.

Now as far as belts I have two mated 25 round shotgun bands one all buckshot and one all slugs (sometime 15 slugs and 10 buck if I shoot up a lot of slugs and just break out one bulkpack of winchester 1 oz slugs) I have never grabbed it for any reason other than to throw in a bag for a roadtrip or throw in the truck for camping trip (private land) softsided guitar gigbags or sports gear bags tend to walk right into a hotel room with no problem (where legal...some states you can no longer put a shotgun in a guitar case I'm told) But a sportsbag with a compartment for bats or a nice tennisbag fits an M4 or a riotgun pretty well for low profile travel. and the sling makes grabbing a pretty decent assortment of ammo fast and easy...it's all ready to grab...in the off chance I need THAT MUCH firepower it is there and portable. It also rolls up and fits in a Brinks lockbox good for legal transport through states where you need it locked in a separate container ($10). I've never "used" it as more than a convienient way to keep a known amount and type of ammo together and handy...but I guess I've had it for like 10 years...it has served some useful purpose in that way...plus it just looks cool hanging by your riotgun-LOL

(OK it's really out of sight under the edge of the bedskirt on my side...in my single days it looked pretty cool though-LOL!)

WRT ammo belts or bandoleers, if someone is banging loudly on your door at 3am and it turns out to be the cops looking for a crime suspect, do you really want to greet them all decked out like Pancho Villa? Might get the cuffs slapped on you as a prime suspect.

I prefer to have my HD shotgun look more like something a hunter would use, since if I ever had to shoot someone it would be lots easier to explain to a jury.

kingpin008:

A sidesaddle is a no-go for Knoxx/BH Spec Ops Folder and Cop Stock Folder.

Community Defense, any situation that means we may have to militia things up and keep peace and order near home in times of crisis.

All you Rugged Individualists take note, CD is better done by team work, not Rambo style action movie fantasies. And firearms are only part of the picture. Communications, Medical supplies and training, etc, are also important.

The question seemed to be what would you have in your 20 round-to-go belt. If I was going to have 20 rounds in a quick grab belt I would say 15 rounds of reliable 00 buck and 5 slugs.
*special note I just hit 300 posts :)

My shotgun holds 10. I never would have thought that would be less than enough.

If community defense is the issue, grab the AR.

^^^

My Turkey gun holds 9. I agree with the above poster. For HD I can't imagine more than 9 intruders coming up my stairs in a surprise break in. If I lived a different lifestyle where I felt the need for more protection, I would change my lifestyle.

That's a tad Rambo-esque, in itself.

Real "community defense" situations usually just involve a few neighbors, sometimes with guns, standing their ground and telling looters/rioters/assorted scumbags to get lost. That was true in the LA riots, Katrina, and the sundry California brushfires. There were no "militias", guerilla warfare, radio tents, nor amateur MASH units.

What's really important is that you get some idea of which of your neighbors you'd trust in that situation.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't have first aid kits, water or food, of course.

I think the ammo belt is not a bad idea. People say well if you need more than 1 magazine then something is wrong.. I think well maybe not, you could have missed and shot all your rounds out in a panic mode to defend your life. Sure 1 round is enough to take down a BG but will just 1 round defend your house? No. You might miss or something. So get your ammo belt and keep it near your gun :D my 0.2 cents.

I do not care if my ak mag held 75 I would still have a backup magazine, why? what if it jams? what if the spring breaks or some random unlucky day? what if there is a raid of a gangs or something insane that they were robbing houses and I have to defend myself from 5, 10 or more people?

Shotgun ammo belts take up a lot of space, to hold something that fits in a small bag.

This is the unrealistic I was writing about. If you ever had a situation where you needed that many rounds in an encounter, you aren't going to have the time to reload before you get overwhelmed.

You deal with looters or armed gangs before they enter your home. If in times of uncertainty, blocking off the streets and manning the barricades with your neighbors will usually tell looters that there are easier picking elsewhere.

Here is what I do, get a cheap "dump pouch" that has a clip on the back. The rock climbing chalk pouches work well for this. Then put 20 rounds of your favorite ammo in the bag. I also have a slip over butt stock sleeve with slugs to go with my dump pouch of 00 buck

If you are going to need more than the 6-10 shells in the gun for home defense you really need to move. And as to the problem of looters, in katrina most looters ran at the mere sight of a gun, and when they didn't they ran after one or two in the front got shot.

Well, I'm even more minimalist hard core than thou...

If you need more than the two shells in a SxS, you need to move.

Scratch that, if you need more shells that can fit into an H&R single shot, you need to move.

Actually, if you need to actually load the shotgun and use more than your command voice to dissuade the goblins, you need to move.

Maybe we can all move to the same town of Inanityville. Looks to be a lot of residents pretty soon.

While I personally would feel plenty comfortable with a SxS for HD, I see nothing wrong with keeping a belt around. It's not like they're that expensive. I sewed two 25 rounders together, it's half 00 buck and half slugs. Can I really imagine a scenario where it's needed? Not in the life I live. My 11-87 Police has 6 in the mag and five more on a butt cuff, and I can't even imagine needing that much.

But I also can't think of a good reason not to. The two belts cost me about $12, and IMO it stores better hanging in the closet than 10 boxes of shells would, stacked between bedsheets and hats, just waiting to fall off like dominos when I go to change the linen.

I say no one should poo-poo shotshell belts if that someone has mag pouches for pistol and rifle mags. Same concept.

When I was at Basin Sports picking up some last minute stuff for the Crusader Shotgun Training I asked the guy if they had any shotshell belts. He smirkingly showed me the bandoliers and I said "I just need a cheap belt, I don't need to look like a dick."

Post training though, I kinda wish I had gone with a bandolier. ;)

I keep a seven shot shotgun with five extra in a butt cuff. That and a Glock with two magazines protect the house.

I keep a belt with handgun holster, magazine carrier and shotshell bag for Community defense. I also have a magazine carrier/belt setup for my AK's and handguns. All to be used or handed out as situation dictates.
These are all kept unloaded and stored with other supplies. I run through dry runs with them every so often while doing inventory and rotation of any emergency provisions I have.

I imagine it's a slim chance I would need more than a few shots out of either much less the rest but I was a boyscout so i'm prepared. A little patience, careful research and shopping and putting it together was not very expensive.

I got one to grab if I ever need it but good lord help if I do. 00 buck chambered followed by 3 more and 2 KO slugs. 3 more slugs and 2 more 00 on the holder on the folding stock.

I got a belt with 5 #4 buck, and the rest slugs and 00 buck. I also got my old elastic butt cuff that I had on the original stock for that gun loaded up with shells and if worse comes to worse people, shove ya hand thru it and have it on your forearm.

Is it overkill/borderline nutty? I'd bet it was, but its better to be ready than not.

I keep 3 00B (brass down) and three slugs (brass up) in the side saddle.

I have 5 slugs on my belt (brass down) right next to the buckle and the rest is 00B (brass up).

I know I'm telling my age (again), but I have always had a soft spot for a Claymore bag. Dead simple, two pouches, a shoulder strap and a snap cover. Buckshot on one side and slugs on the other. No Claymore of course...

It's a shame they're so hard to find and expensive these days.

I keep a 20 gauge coach gun with a butt cuff by the bed. It's all I'll ever need. I'll let the cops "clear the streets" if it came to that. I guess, if it was, say, looting after a hurricane (I've never seen it and I've been through several hurricanes), I have my hunting shotguns and my ammo bags for hunting. I carry 2 boxs hunting, usually, when attacked by killer ducks. I never fire more'n 15 or so for a limit, but my worst nightmare is running out of ammo. Might as well over do it. I guess that's where the OP is coming from, but I figure if I can kill 6 teal buzzing in at 40 mph on the wing, I can take out a couple of bad guys with 7 rounds on tap. But, I'm not worried about TEOTWAWKI scenarios, I just wanna be ready if someone kicks in my door.

WRT ammo belts or bandoleers, if someone is banging loudly on your door at 3am and it turns out to be the cops looking for a crime suspect, do you really want to greet them all decked out like Pancho Villa? Might get the cuffs slapped on you as a prime suspect.

I answered the door at 0230 one morning and it was a cop. They were chasing mojados that had run from a truck out on the bypass toward my house. As I had to leave the bedroom to answer the door, I only had my carry gun, 9mm subcompact, in my pocket. But, I never leave the safe room with a long gun. I shoot a handqun quite well.and trust my abilities and in instances like that, it's far less embarrassing not having any sign of a gun in your hands.

While hunting, I've taken to carrying my rounds in a large fanny pack, will hold 2 full boxes of 3.5" 10 gauge. I still carry my traditional game belt with shell bag on either side dove hunting, but I can wear the fanny pack under my waders, keeps my ammo from being dunked in salt water when I'm duck hunting. The fanny pack is fast to put on and load from and wouldn't make you look like Pancho Villa if you meet a cop at the front door, I mean, if you plan on missing 50 times..
