Should I butcher a Safariland retention holster?

I have had my Beretta 92 for 20+ years now and have never had a holster for it. Today I picked up a nice Safariland 070 holster that is supposed to fit a 92.... it didn't. My buddy pointed out the middle finger release on the holster and walla... I can now holster my Beretta. I have been around guns for most of my life but a retention holster was a new one on me.

To remove my Beretta from the Safariland 070-20 retention holster I have to undo the thumb snap, undo the middle finger snap then pull the Beretta to the rear and lift. My complements to the law enforcement individuals that have mastered this in one invisible uninterrupted motion... there is no chance that I will. The 2 snaps are easy enough but the rearward motion and lift doesn't work without a thick heavy duty belt to secure the holster. I am thinking about removing the 2 rivets that hold the plastic retention piece in the front of the holster so I can undo the 2 snaps and have a straight pull.

The reason I haven't had a holster for my Beretta up till now is that I never carry it and there is really no chance I ever will. I carry a XSD 3.3 - 45 or a LCP that has recently replaced me NAA Guardian. My Beretta isn't my favorite range gun either... I much prefer one of my 1911's at the range. I paid $10 for the Safariland holster at Goodwill but believe it to be brand new. I found these holsters go for around $150. I can see myself using the Safariland at the range when I am shooting my Beretta if it was easier to draw.

So what do you think? Butcher the Safariland by removing the plastic retention clip and try to do a good enough job drilling the rivets that I could reinstall it at some point... or just leave the poor holster be? The holster really is an impressive piece of workmanship!... but I doubt I would use it even at the range in its current state.

The plastic bag is wrapped around the pistol to loosen the holster a bit.

This is the best I could do to show the plastic retention clip on the inside front of the holster (Bottom in this view).

I did a similar thing to a Safariland ALS holster that was issued to me for a Beretta 92. I didn't like the double retention between the thumb strap and the bottom catch clip mechanism. So I removed it. Made holstering and unholstering much easier for whenever I used that holster, which was rare.

I chopped up an Uncle Mikes "tactical" holster to fit my Taurus PT1911AR; none of the holsters that say "fits 1911-type guns with or without rail" fit it. Works now! It ain't pretty, though.

Thanks guys. I have decided to chop it up. I will post some pics of my hack job after I finish it. It should be a really nice holster without that plastic retainer. I don't mind the under snap on the holster... I am not going to use the holster for anything other than third hand to hold the Beretta at the range while reloading clips. So I am not going to try to quick draw with it. I did pick up a 2 1/4" duty belt off ebay for $15 delivered that I will mount the holster on while at the range. My leather jeans belt just isn't enough belt for the holster.

After carrying my 92 on my hip in the holster for a couple hours I understand why all the departments have switched the the "Plastic-Fantastics". I love the solid feel of my Beretta but man it would get heavy carrying it day in and day out. Especially with all the other clutter officers have to carry. This holster is an interesting insight into what LEO's have to carry.

"...and walla..." Voilà, perhaps? 'Walla' is half a place in Washington State. snicker.
Absolutely modify a holster that doesn't do what you want. However, the plastic won't do anything. Probably best to strip the finish(shoe repair shop will have a bottle of leather finish remover that works well. Forget the brand name. Isn't just one anyway.) and wet form it.

I've seen several coworkers at the range with that exact holster. Some were smoother than others, but that holster seems overall kind of slow.

Interested in your finished results.
