I have been eyeing the Ruger GP100's for a while now and had pretty much settled on a 4" stainless full underlug model. I was at one of the local shops today and saw a used stainless GP100 with the half lug 6" barrel. Upon a cursory inspection it appeared to be a virtually new gun with no obvious wear. It also felt extremely well balanced and the price on it was $349. This would be a range gun and since I already have a S&W 4" 586 I'm thinking that a 6" .357 would be nice to have. I would of course go back and inspect it in detail following Jim March's guide if I get serious about it. I know that the $349 price tag is not a steal but seems reasonable considering the condition and that Ruger doesn't manufacture the short lug 6" version anymore. I know that none of you can make up my mind for me but I would like to hear opinions on the 6" vs. 4" and does it really add enough of a different dimension to the shooting experience. Aesthetically, I prefer the 4" but this is a nice gun and might add a new wrinkle to my range time. Thanks, Mike

Fixed or adjustable sights? I would grab it with adjustable sights. Would the shop throw in a set of Hogue grips? You already like it.

It has adjustable sights and I love the GP100 grips, I don't care for Hogues at all. I think I will go back for a closer look. Thanks guys, Mike

The balance of the GP100 short-shroud 6" is astonishingly good - it FEELS and points like a 4". Assuming it checks out, and it's otherwise what you want, grab it :).
