Should I?

My FIL has a few old guns. One is the Savage over and under .22 x .410. Last I looked one book I saw said $165 but that was 2 years ago. He's also got a Japanese 7mm(?) with the bayonet and a percussion cap double barrel SG with a missing hammer. He wants to sell them. I think it would be neat to have that Savage because they use to advertise them in the back of comic books. The money situation is tight. I'd rather not spend any on guns right now but I don't want to miss anything, so I'm willing to go for it but I'll put it to a vote just for fun. Also, what do you guys think would be a fair price for them separately or as a whole. I'll say they're in fair condition. The shotgun has so far been unidentifiable.

I'd tell you to buy them all. If you don't, I really want the Savage so I can replace my Grandfather's that was stolen!

If you haven't already got one of those douoble barrel black powder shotguns you should get that. More fun than a human should be allowed!

definitly get the Savage use to get borrow one every year for the family pheasant hunt one of the best pointing shotguns i have ever been aquainted with.

I used to have one of those Savage's but it was a 20 ga under a 22. That was the most useful gun in the world for "pot hunting." I was thinking about that gun just last night as one of those "never should have gotten rid of" guns.

(I always thought they should make one in 12 mag 30/30. What a gun for a deer hunter.)

The other two wouldn't interest me a bit. YMMV.

Every gun I didn't buy when I could have, I've regretted not having. Same for every gun I've sold or gifted.

Yea, I was a lot like that kid in the "shoot your eye out" movie. I use to see those things in the back of the comic books and wanted one in the worst way. Mentioned it a few times too. No such luck... Dad wasn't much of a shooter and mom was a dead set anti.

Oh WHY can't real life be like Hollywood? LOL...

I'm fairly new to the Arisaka scene, but if the Japanese rifle you describe is what I suspect, it should be worth between $200 and $300 w/ bayonet, depending on condition. If the crysanthimum is still on the reciever, it is worth over $600; most of them were ground off.

Thanks for that. I DO believe the chrysanthemum is there. It's been a while since I've seen the rifle though. I'm not sure on the condition, I know the bayonet is fairly well pitted, it shows it's age.

I say pick up the Savage, ours is a model 24C .22/20-ga. "Camper's Companion" model that breaks down without tools and fits in a backpack, etc. The stock holds a few rounds of .22 and 3 or 4 shells behind a metal plate in the butt.

I saw a new model 24 at Gander Mtn., $400+ for a heavier, uglier, plastic-stock gun.

The Type 99 is not worth $600 unless is it something super special (all matching, mint, with airplane sights, bipod and dust cover). Even with the mum intact it's probably closer to $300 and even then they aren't moving fast at that price.

Unless you're into fixing old shotguns with limited applications that you have no way of knowing whether it is a reliable piece or not pass on the BP

The Arisaka is an ammo oddity and likely just a wallhanger. So is the old shotgun. Since almost no one can safely display firearms on the walls of their home any more due to the dangers of theft, wallhangers are a nonstarter for most of us.

The Savage is working as is, I take it, and is a functional and useful piece (I have a full size .22/20 ga., a .22/20 ga. Camper's Companion, a .30-30/20 ga. and a .223/12 ga.). If money is tight I vote you buy the Savage, and let someone else buy the others.

Graf and Sons has the Arisaka (both 7 and 6mm) ammo for about $20 a box now, I just ordered some.

I suppose he would but I know he wants to get rid of them so I don't want to be holding him up. Plus an old friend of his has also expressed interest in the Savage, not a family member though so I DO have first choice but not for long.

Just told MIL to tell FIL that I'm interested in them. She says, "I don't know WHY he has to sell them, if it was me I'd just give them to you." Tell me I don't have a good MIL, I REALLY lucked out on THAT one!
