Geologists have admitted that the Yellowstone Super-Volcano is 20,000 years past due for a major eruption. Rock deformation has already occurred that dwarfs that of Mt. St. Helens in 1980
NEWS BRIEF: "It Is Time To Cast a Worried Eye Towards Yellowstone", YOWUSA.COM, 22-August-2003, Larry Park and Marshall Masters

Yesterday afternoon, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred just 9 miles southeast of the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park ... given the shallow depth of this quake, the volcanism model developed by Larry Park has suddenly lurched us a huge step towards a worst-case eruption event. Simply put, anyone living within 600 miles of Yellowstone could be sitting in a modern day Pompeii. In addition, for those living outside this area and West of the Mississippi River, there could be grievous consequences as well, because systemic processes are now building beneath Yellowstone that paint a very clear picture of a major eruption event in its early stages.

If a super eruption occurs at Yellowstone, scientists predict a 600 mile casualty radius.

Yellowstone HAS erupted before, twice. Here is a map of the extent of the destruction from the earlier blasts. This map depicts the recorded ash fall of the two previous Yellowstone Super Volcano eruptions.

Yellowstone_SuperVolcano.jpg

"Sooner or later, geologists warn, a 'super volcano' will strike. The eruption of pent-up energy will cover half the United States in ash, in some places up to 3 feet (1 meter) deep. Earth will be plunged into a perpetual winter that would last years. Some plant and animal species will disappear forever. Even humans could be pushed to the edge of extinction." [Space.com, op. cit]

Now, hypothetically, say that Yellowstone erupts the Sping/Summer of this year. Say the first map depicted in this thread (the hypothetical one) is the distribution of ash from the eruption as well as the potential casualty radius. As a result the US is put in a state of national emergency, the sun is blotted out and dimmed all over as a result of the ash in the sky (as many speculate is what happened during the “dark agesâ€) and there is general chaos and rioting everywhere.

Now, that is the scenario, tell us according to where you live now, how you would deal with the threat in your area? What would you do, bug out or stay in? What guns would you use/bring? Is you are around the edge of the blast radius, how would you deal with the ash? What would you do? How would the darkness be dealt with? Let’s have some fun with this potentially real scenario.

fire and brimstone falling from the sky, forty years of darkness, earthquakes, mass hysteria, human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together!

rock jock - nice ghost busters line.

I remember St Helens. I remember the foot deep layer of ash everywhere.

Great fertilizer. Crops did well the next year.

Bring it.

Blain,
YOWUSA is a pretty bizarre site with little real justification. I don't know who Larry Park is, but if he is a seismologist, he has confused some facts. For example, Pompeii was covered by a pyroclastic flow. The predicted zone of destruction is very naive as it is completely round and takes nothing into account regarding the jet stream.

As far as being 20K late in erupting, there are some volcanoes more than a million years late in erupting. Do we worry about those? You gotta figure that if the Yellowstone eruption is 20K late, we are in no more danger now than we were 500 years ago.

You have to wonder about the math being spouted. The article states a near clockwork schedule of 2 mya, 1.3 mya, and then 630 kbp. So our spread is 700k from 2 mya to 1.3 mya. Then the spread is 670k between 1.3 mya and 630 kbp .

Statistically, there is no clockwork spread with just 3 dates and 2 spreads. The fact that the spreads are completely different does not exactly add credibility to claim of clockwork. If the clockwork pattern is reducing by 30k each time, then the next eruption isn't due for 10k years. If the last spread was 670K and the last eruption was 630 kbp and the reduction pattern was 30k, then we have 10,000 years to go.

Maybe my math is off some, but paranoid delusions are any good if they aren't realistic.

If it happens before the elections you can bet who it will be blamed on!!!! Depending on what source that is used it is past time or not quite time yet. Economically it would be devistating. Climate wise global warming would be out the window. Life would sure change and Those able to adape with the least amount of change would survive. If you depend of someone else for everything you do and eat it could be trouble.

Double Naught Spy, considering ordinary circumstances you would be correct. Just because something is "past due" doesn't make it an ideal candidate for eruption. However, recent geological findings have discovered some troubling volcanic activity at Yellowstone as of late. Something down there is definitely brewing. It could happen.

they have been talking about it with experts on CoastToCoastAm radio show on latenight am radio

along with a ton of other stuff with various experts and tin foil hat wearers.

I only wish I could be in orbit to watch that thing go.

its one thing to be dormant, its another to have earthquakes and temperatures spiking at hot springs. weird bird and other animal activity like out in california before an earthquake.

Bruce beat me to it. GW would have to take credit for this environmental disaster:rolleyes:

Perpetual winter? No different than my current living conditions- I think I'll be ok. Besides, we wouldn't have to listen to any more 'the sky is falling' crap from environazis about global warming, because the sky will have fallen and they will be praying for warming:D

Why does there have to be a simmering supervolcano in the good part of the country? Wouldn't it be better if there were one located off the east coast that would hit New York, New Jersey, Mass, and Maryland mostly? Lets blame the BLM or the national park system for picking such a poor location to put a seething geological bomb

change the channel

Volcano has been running all this week on HBO.
Time to change the channel and watch R. Lee Emery and MailCall.

can't the EPA fine the volcano for exceeding our Kyoto accord limits for CO2 output?

if it blows, we are all gonna have to trade in our hemis and drive hybrid cars for 12 million years just to make up the difference
