Sig 226 Variations

I have a nearly new Sig 226 (99% condition) on the way. It's German made with the internal extractor and I believe it has the stamped sheet metal slide assembly.

It seems I remember reading there are variations on the P226. Could a couple of Sig-ites' tell me what the variations are, if any?

Is there are preferred variation? I know if it's a Sig, it's good.

I don't know about the specific variations, but generally the stamped sheet metal 226's are held in higher regard than the newer milled stainless slides. They are much better balanced in most folks hands.

There is a very good chance that you'll love this gun. Enjoy.

A good one like yours is highly prized by Sig-o-philes. I've heard as well that they are better balanced. If it feels better in the hand than my new P226 Navy, well then that is saying something, 'cause mine is pretty sweet!
Back when yours was made, that was about the only variation.
Nowadays, the sky's the limit on variations.
I have a 9mm alloy frames, railed Navy and a stainless framed, railed .40. I prefer the looks of the non-railed Sigs better, but my two pistols are both top flight shooters.
Yours will have a traditional blued slide without any fancy modern coatings, so it will require a little more TLC than the modern Nitron coated stainless steel slides.

The folded steel slides with internal extractors on early 226s were carbon steel and were made in Germany. The milled slides with external extractors on current 226s are stainless steel and are made in the US.

The carbon steel slides are lighter than the stainless steel slides and many Sig shooters think the earlier 226s balance better than the newer 226s.

What import markings are on your gun and what is its date code?

Here is how to interpret the date codes and import markings were "Tysons Corner VA" from 1985 to 1988, "Herndon, VA" from 1988 to 1990, and "Exeter NH" since 1990.
