Are mags for the 228/229 interchangable?

Brownells offers Mec-Gar 228 mags...are the Mec-Gar mags factory SIG OEM?

I have a couple of 10 round 228 mags, but would like to get a couple of 'pre ban' mags before they are banned again.

Thanks,

salty

The sig P228 and 229 are virtually identical as far as magazine compatibility is concerned. A P228 magazine with perform as well in a 9mm P229.

There were some great P228 mags for sale in the Sig Forum. If they are all gone, I have some I could spare if you are interested. Pre-ban 13-rounders.

I thought the 229 mags were longer, I don't know for sure. One of my sons has 'borrowed' the 228, so I do not have a way to check for Mec-Gar logo on the mags.

I was going to give it to him anyway, but wanted to fool around with it a bit first.

Maybe I'll have more success geting the 228 back than I have had with 'borrowed' tools.

Sig Forum does not seem to be available.

Yes, I am interested in your 13 round mags. PM or e-mail follows.

Thanks,

salty

The mags are interchangeable between the P228 and P229 in 9mm.

Mec-Gar, on the aftermarket side, makes 15-round mags for the P228/9 and 17-rounders for the P226 (again this is 9mm). Reportedly these function just as well as the OEM capacity counterparts.

Recently learned this, too, but Mec-Gar is the manufacturer of Sig OEM mags and has been for years. I didn't know about it until I started looking for mags for my P229 about a month ago.

Today I spent the better part of the morning reading up on the difference between the Italian made Mec-Gars and the German made Sig mags of yesteryear. Consensus is the Mec-Gars are actually built better and feed just as reliably as the German originals. No one has any complaints about them than I can find. Guess that's a good thing.

All the P228 mags (German made) on the Sig Forum are sold out as of last Tuesday. I don't know if he's going to get more, but they are available from various sites as the current OEM offering by Mec-Gar.
