Sig P220 in 10mm

If true, there will be a G20SF and G29SF on the used market.

Well, unless Sig prices it in the four-figure range. That would deter a lot of 10mm fans and probably make it a very short run of that project. I'm excited enough to seriously consider dumping my two glocks now though…

I would really like to see them do a P320 in 10mm. The Glock grip angle issue alone is enough reason to have one. A lightweight Sig poly gun in 10mm will likely flood the market with used Glocks.

Typically going from .45 to 10mm, you gain +2 rounds in magazine capacity as seen going from G21 to G20 maintaining the same size. Which would make a 10mm P220 a 10+1 handgun, that would be a very interesting pistol indeed.

herrwalther, perhaps that is so with double stack magazines, but the 220 is single stack.
My 1977 9mm P220 holds 9 rounds in magazine while my later P220 pistols chambered in 45auto hold 8 rounds in magazine.
One would speculate the new 10mm 220 would possibly hold 9 or ten rounds.
Would depend on how far the magazine baseplate protrudes.
Oops! My nine mag base is flush, while my 45 bases are extended.
If the 10mm mags are extended, they may very well hold ten rounds.

10mm chambering on an aluminum frame?
Is that wise?
I can see a polymer framed 10mm from SIG Sauer.

The articles state they will be offered in there Elite series, which is stainless steel.

Correct. As I've read on the various forums all the models will be on stainless frames.

Slim or none.....

Id say 0.
If SIG Sauer were to put out a 10mm it might be a "race gun" type in the SAO/X-5, X-6 format. $2000-3000.00 USD and all high grade steel.
It'd be nice but only for sofisticated collectors or target shooters.

It is true, SIG will be introducing the new chambering in several steel framed 220 models.

They allowed Sigforum to break the news on the internet and I know a couple of people who have handled them at the factory.

I've shot a few of the custom 10mm 220s built by Grayguns, who shared his knowledge with the factory when they were deciding to make this offering, but the 10mm chambering really didn't do anything for me.

IPSC/3 Gun?.....

I'm not much into target shooting or match use, but is the 10mm now a more common semi auto caliber?
Id think most match shooters would still use the .45acp or maybe a .40S&W.

when I shoot my 1911 or Commander both in .45 ACP
at the range along with my CZ 75B DA/SA 9x19 I find
DA/SA & the reset clunky if I shoot it after instead
of before.

Everytime I look/consider at the P220 it's fat at 1.5"
and I've never liked the DA/SA in the 2nn line. reading
the specs on the SIg web site, it mentions the Elite
has a longer bevertail, and SRT/Short Reset Trigger so
perhaps it;s improved.

Elite Match is $ 1,395 - Standard 220 is < $ 1,200

Id rather see a new model based on the 210 SAO design
scaled up for 10MM AUto.

It'll be priced around $1050 at my LGS. If it is a great gun, I will get one. Perhaps they will release an SAO version.

They'll do OK in the very low 4-figure range. Other than the Glocks and lower end Witnesses, one is looking at >$900 for a 10mm. The Delta, Kimber ST or Eclipse, Witness Limited, the DW pistols-all in the $1,000+ range these days.

"Elite" does not mean stainless frame. I have a 220 Carry Elite Dark, and it has an aluminum frame. Yes, these upcoming Sig 10mm guns sound like they'll be stainless framed guns (thankfully), but the words "Elite" and "Stainless" are not interdependent in the Sig Sauer world.

Now, on to my reaction of this news - GREAT! I have a Glock 20SF, and I will take a very long look at these new Sig 10mms. This is a great piece of news for fans of the 10mm cartridge, as it might bring some much needed attention that could eventually get other manufacturers into the round. I'm looking at you, Ruger, Springfield, and Smith & Wesson...

Sig wants to be the #1 (biggest) manufacturer of handguns in the world. They would like to be able to say they sell more than Ruger or S&W. To do that they need to build a 10 mm. My guess is they will build one weather it sells or not. Anyone remember the Sig 357? They did a pretty good job of convincing LE agencies they needed those. 10 mm is the next "new" cartridge. A 10 mm Sig will happen but a lot of folks will wonder why. 45 acp for me.

I always thought a great general purpose outdoor sidearm would be a Sig P220 Scorpion, with a stainless frame and heavy recoil spring, able to handle both .45 ACP and .45 Super. If Sig put out a 220 Stainless Scorpion in 10mm, I might think long and hard about giving up my Glock 20SF.

My 220 Carry Elite Dark comes with very thin Hogue Aluminum grips. They make the 220 grip noticeably thinner than my S&W 1911 with standard Hogue rubber grips. The Elite line does come with Sig's SRT, which is a great trigger. Just a few millimeters out from the back of the trigger guard and you get a sharp, precise reset with audible click. My only complaint about the Sig 220 is the very tall slide and high bore axis. It takes some getting used to after shooting Glocks or similar semi-autos.

Just the idea of a BIG firearms manufacturer like Sig coming out with a handgun chambered in 10mm is exciting. 10mm fans have been limited to either Glock, EAA, some 1911s, or trying to find a used 3rd Gen S&W. The more options, the better!

I ran into a guy at the shooting range today who works for Sig. He had on a Sig hat and shirt and referred to Sig as "we". He told me the Sig 10mm will be out in January and will be based on the 227.

He also had a new, unfired P320. I didn't even know that model existed. It fit my hand really well. He said it was developed for the bid to replace the M9.

Well, there've been "rumors" for some years that Sig was looking at what Bruce Gray (@Gray Guns) had done on his conversions of stainless .45acp 220s to 10mm (using Bar-Sto barrels, IIRC). He had once published a checklist of the steps in the conversion on the Sig Forums board, and it included something like 5 220 mags that he modified to feed the 10mm cartridge.

The fact that Sig itself apparently authorized the Sig Forum to announce the gunmaker's intent to produce 3 stainless 10mm 220 models is significant and thus makes the subject more than an internet rumor.

Link from 9/24/2014 provided below ...

Hopefully, we'll see Sig produce and get these 10mm models on to the market, unlike the situation with Vltor, which announced its intent to produce a beefed-up, "improved" 10mm Bren Ten (and actually did furnish several S.H.O.T show prototypes), but now, several years down the road, the company still hasn't delivered a production model for long-suffering 10mm fans to buy ...

I'd consider that a pretty far reach, since they don't have a stainless 227 frame in current production.

The models announced are all stainless framed 220s. It makes it a relatively easy conversion on a current frame frame.

Been out in LGS already and several folks are shooting them. Grayguns is currently working up their package for it.

Just for the sake of accuracy, the magazines provided with the Grayguns converted 220s were manufactured for them by Metalform. What they gave back was information for production of successful 220 magazines
